The following obituaries were posted by the Orleans County Genweb staff of 8 Feb 2004 and taken from the scrapbooks of Theda Powley Millis of Waterport, NY.

1st Article:

"John McLEAN, 98, died in Cleveland, Ohio, Wednesday, February 5, 1936, at the United States Marine Hospital.

Mr. McLEAN was born in Ayreshire, Scotland, December 6, 1837, and came to America with his parents when he was 18 years of age. The trip took thirty days and was made in a sailing vessel. His parents settled in Lapeer county, Michigan, where they engaged in farming. In 1862, Mr. McLEAN enlisted in the 17th Batter of Light Artillery, and served for three years in the Civil War, being honorably discharged on June 13, 1865. In 1886, he married Miss Mary Thayer, and settled in the town of Yates, where he engaged in farming. After the death of his wife in 1924, he moved to Bristol, Wisconsin to live with his daughter, Mrs. Agnes BOLTON, but returned to Lyndonville in 1933.

McLEAN is survived by thirteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was a Democrat and voted at every presidential election, except one, since 1860. He was the oldest member of Yates Lodge, 675, F. & A. M.

The remains were brought to Lyndonville yesterday afternoon and the funeral will be held this [Thursday] afternoon at 2:30 in the Masonic temple. Rev. H. A. Depfer, officiating. The Masonic funeral service will be given. Burial will be in Lynhaven Cemetery. A military funeral will be held at the grave by troops from Fort Niagra, under command of Master Sergeant Burke."

2nd Article:

"LYNDONVILLE, Feb. 13. - With troops present from Ft. Niagara and fellow member of Yates lodge 675, F. & A. M., in attendance, the body of John McLEAN, 97, the oldest member of the Masonic fraternity in this village and one of the last two surviving Civil war veterans in Orleans county, was laid to rest today.

Burial followed a combined military-Masonic funeral, conducted in Lyndonville Masonic temple. The rites were under the direction of Postmaster George Weber, Mr. McLEAN, who died Tuesday in Cleveland, was born in Ayreshire, Scotland, Dec. 6, 1838[7], and came to Lyndonville in 1857. En enlisted in 1862 in the 17th New York Battery, Light Artillery, and was honorably discharged June 13, 1865. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Agnes BOLTON of Bristol, Wis."
