EARLY WARS United States Military and Pension Records: William Dunnington of Md. B 1750-54, enlisted April 3, 1776, re-enlisted June 20, 1777 & served "in the Continental Establishment" throughout the Revolutionary War under Captains James Gray & John Lowe in the 3rd Md. Regiment commanded by Colonel Gimby (Grimby?). He stated that he was taken prisoner four times by the British, once by the Tories, and that he lost the use of his right arm from wounds received in the battle of German town. The pension file further indicates that his daughter Ann Lynch was born about 1791 in Maryland; that he later re-settled & married (2nd?) in Ky. & died there 24 Nov. 1834.

R.W. Muster rolls of 1780 for the 3rd Maryland Regiment (Major Anderson then in command) list a Pri. William Dunnington in Capt. Horatio Claggett's company &, separately, a Wm. Dunnington an entry in the Lineage Bk. of DAR.(Vol 140,P.100) refers to a Private Wm. Dunnington's service in Captain William Winter's Company, Charles County Militia, and in Capt. Horatio Claggett's company 3rd Regiment, Md. troops, & states that he was born & died (1740-1802) in Charles County, Md. Differences in dates, enlistments & other data imply that there were two, perhaps three, individual WILLIAM DUNNINGTON's in those times but record-keeping was subject to some hazards then.

Other Revolutionary War Dunningtons mentioned in Archives of Maryland include Hezekiah, enlisted July 19 1776; Jer (Jeremiah?) "left sick & Salsbury" August 1780; & Francis enlisted 1780 & died April 23, 1783. Francis Dunnington (Sr) 1740-1820) of Charles County, Md. is cited as a Revolutionary War Ancestor (private, 3rd Md. Regiment) in the DAR Maryland State Society Directory of Mbrs. & Ancestors, 1892-1965. In several published compilations of R.V. Virginians, no Dunningtons or close variations of the name are included.

George Dunnington was commissioned ensign of Capt. Samuel Lucketts' company, 26th battalion, Charles County Militia in Maryland Provincial Council proceedings Friday, April 6, 1781 but there is no record of active Federal Service.

In the War of 1812, Capt Roger Dunnington (1774-1827) saw active Federal service commanding a detachment of the 43rd Regiment, Hamilton's Maryland Militia, & fought in the Battle of Blandensburg in the summer of 1814. Many other Charles County Dunningtons participated in the Regiment's defense against "The British Invasion of Md. 1812-1815, ensign Francis E; Sergeants James B., John P.M, Jonathan F., & Thomas; drummer John B.; privates Nathan & Peter; & paymaster William W.(all born "178?") Capt Rogers company included Francis E., James B., John P.M., Peter & John B., the last serving also in Lt. Miller's company. Johathan F. & Thomas served under Capt. Dent, Nathan under Capt. Burgess. Elsewhere, Pvt. R.M. Dunnington served in the Tenn. Militia under Capt. Tunnell. Pvt. Richard Dunnington served in the Va. militia under Capts. J.R.Lynn & Geo. Hamilton & Later moved to Morgan County,Ohio where he married (2nd) Alsadana Stibbon of Maine on Feb., 1844.
