Notes for A
RTHUR FOSTER:
From Ark History Comm., Little Rock, Ark., Deeds Index AE. Page 544BZZ: Arthur Foster from R.D. Greene, March 3, 1925 rcd. 18 Feb 1920. This is the place I remember us calling "the Green House". This is the place we were living when Carl was born 15 August 1924.
Book E B5-P-43: Arthur Foster from C.C. Varnall Aug 17, 1925-April 17, 1925. This is the place Papa & Mama built, for the first time, their house. It was across town from the "Green House", in Carthage, Ark., I remember Papa & Mam doing a lot of the work themselves. The house was framed and they would do the inside work themselves at night after Papa had gotten from work. I think that Papa was working with the Rock Island Railroad at the time, doing section work, very, very hard work. But back to the building the house. It was built in a wooded area. Only enought trees were cut down to put the house. So after getting the house partially ready to move into, we moved into it. There were trees very near to the house, so they cut them down themselves, and made 'stove wood' from them. Papa would fuss at Mama for doing what he called 'riding the saw'. She was truly his help mate. That must have been hard work for her.

Then there was the question of water. The water at the 'Green House' was never to good. When you started from scratch you had to dig your well. So they dug a well which tasted terrible, when it finally gave some water. It didn't even make good water for washing clothes. This seemed to be the story of their lives-- 'water'. Finally they had a good well in Butterfield, Arkansas, but that is another story.

Warranty Deed--to Arthur Foster: for the sum of One hundred and Forty and no/100 ($140.00) cash in hand paid by Arthur Foster, lands lying in the County or Hot Springs & State of Ark. E.D. Harris and Oma Harris were the sellers, dated: 21 March 1927 filed 6 April 1927.

After living for a short time in Carthage, Arkansas in the house that Papa & Mama partially built themselves, we moved back to Butterfield. It seems that Gordon Linams in-laws needed someone to take care of their old homeplace. The place was off the highway going toward Hot Springs before getting to Magnet Cove. It had a terraced fruit orchard. I remember it having a apple tree that bore more than one kind of apples. The house (it seemed to me) was large, a hall going down the middle, with high ceilings but far away from neighbors.      The house was built on a hill, in the back of the house was the terraced orchard. Arnold Dee and I had a little play wagon. We would take turns getting on the wagon and pushing each other down the bumpy hill. Finally we would turn over and have to bring the wagon back up the hill. We had lots of fun playing like that.

In the front of the house down the hill was a spring. That is where the water came from for all the house- hold use. Earlier someone had built what was known then as a 'spring house'. It was right over the spring, had a shelf and a cover. Water would run through and it would be cool inside the box- like construction. That is where we keep foods to keep them cool--milk, butter etc. Even though the place was in a way isolated we were happy there.

I think that I need to say more about who owned the place. In the 1910 Hot Springs County Arkansas Papa was listed as Arthur Fauster age 19 and working as a Section Hand with the railroad and as a boarder with the Linams. I do know that he lived with the Linams in his younger days. They were sort of like relations to him. A son in the Linams family, Gordon, was listed also. I knew these people as Grandma and Grandpa Linam, Gordon was Uncle Gordon to me. In researching marriage license, I found that Gordon Linam and Alice Brown got marriage license in December, 1913. So that could be part of the reason that Papa and Mama wanted to return to the Butterfield area. Those were their very close friends. Gordon was section foreman, so he most possible wanted Papa to come back and work for him as he knew that he was a good worker, at the same time he could take care of the Brown property.

In searching marriage license, I found many family friends getting marriage license about this time, including Jim Yarborough and Lydia Westfall I believe in December, 1913. So it finally dawned on me that Papa and Mama ran away to get married. So Louis and I went to the court house in Texakana, Ark., sure enought there it was. Only thing Mama had to give her age as more than she was. She stated she was 18 when she only was 16. Can you imagine the excitement Grandma was having when she found out that Mama had eloped. It seems that Grandma had just took on keeping the Postoffice in Butterfield and from what Grandma had said, Mama was doing the running of the Office. Oh, well, that is another story.

Well, I cannot remember how long we were there, but one morning before Papa went to work (he was working on the Railroad, doing section work), he fired up the stove. He did this so that the house would be warm when we got up, just one of the many neat things he would do for us. He had been gone a little while before Mama discovered fire in the ceiling. There being only us there, we (Mama, Arnold De & I) pulled out as much as we could. The top of the organ had been left at Grandmas in Carthage, so we were able to pull it outthe bottom, had the top been on it we might not have been able to get it out in time before the fire would be to dangerous for us to be going into the house. Mama, was beside herself, rightfully so. But finally it was all over. I can't remember who took us in for a short time. Needless to say Papa was very upset as he blamed himself for not doing such a good job of taking care of the 'place'.

They (Papa & Mama) went to work trying to get settled again. But during that time they found an old house away back in the woods that we moved into. It really was a shack! It must have been as during the month of March, as I remember the wind blowing the lamp out while Mama was trying to fix breakfast. Eventually, a house was built on the property bought from E.D. & Oma Harris. This is the house Charles Prickett and Melvin Valone was born. This place finally had good water.

This transaction I have never been able to understand but here it is: Warranty Deed - to Arthur Foster: for the sum of Fifty and no/100 ($50.00) for lands in County of Hot Spring & State of Ark., 200 ft west of the South west corner of a certain tract in said forty acre tract heretofore deeded by this grantor W.L. Womble, & being on the West side of the Malvern & Hot Springs Dirt Road. Dated 14 Oct 1926. This same property was sold to Cratie & Mary Rusher for $50.00 dated 18 December 1926. After Mama was living in West Plains, Mo., I inquired of her about this transaction and she did not remember it. So I have never found out why the purchase and selling right away. Were we living on the "Brown Place", or were we still in Carthage? Guess I will never know.

In the 1950's they built still another house down the hill from what we called the old 'homeplace'. I do not know the date but Charles & Joyce moved into the 'homeplace after they married August 4, 1953. That is where they were living when Pap passed away April 19, 1957. After Papa died and Charles & Joyce moved from "homeplace', Mama rented the house to Marvin Linam and his family after they moved Mom rented to Mr & Mrs Scott. But she moved into Malvern Manor Apartment O26 October 1974.

From Mama's Diary 10 December 1974 "completed papers on sale of home".
