Notes for MARCELLIN GARAND: Ville Platte, the parish seat of present-day Evangeline Parish, Louisiana, was incorporated in 1858. Before then it was a part of St. Landry Parish. This change ovvurred after the death of Marcelin Garand (1781-1852), an early leader in the movement to incorporate the VP settlement. Garand had come to the area about 1820 and had acquired much of the land that later lay within the coporate limites of the new town. He kept a tavern on the Opelousas-Alexandria road that ran through his land. In 1842, he secured the extablishment of a post-office there, serving as first postmaster of Ville Platte until his death 1852. Because of his efforts on behalf of the communityi, Marcelin Garand is commonly known as "father of Ville Platte." However, William O'Donegan appears on Oct 2, 1785, when for cash he purchased from Jacob Schnell land in Grande Prairie so, it seems that both were instrumental of settling Ville Platte. information from: William O'Donegan: Pioneer settler & trademans of Ville Platte, by Albert Tate, Jr. |
