On March 03, 1890, William, Lucena and nine of their children left the Council Bluffs, Iowa area. They left in five covered wagons pulled by mule teams. Driving the wagons were William and his four sons, Tom, Jim, George, and Bill. The other five children making the trip were Jack, Lige, Ken, Mary, and Dora. They brought 18 head of cattle and several horses. They crossed the Missouri River at St. Joseph over a railroad bridge. They traveled as far as Odessa, MO, arriving in the spring of 1890, where they settled and planted a crop.
In preparation to travel farther south, they harvested and stored their turnips, cabbage, carrots, beans and potatoes. They made one barrel of pickles one of kraut and one of sorghum/crab apple preserves. Just before the trip, they made homemade bread and churned butter, which they shaped into large round balls.

In early December of 1890, they left Odessa, MO and traveled to Vinita, OK (Indian Territory). Mary was seven years old at the time and she said she could remember during the trip, eating sandwiches made of sliced butter and bread. Arriving in Indian Territory, they settled on Abraham Mill's place about 20 miles north of Vinita at Russell Creek. They farmed there for eight years before leasing the Boon Woodall Ranch, which later became the Leforce Ranch, near Estella. A year later, in 1899, they moved back to the Mill's place at Russell Creek.

Mary Long said she could remember that they always had their own meat, lard, milk, butter and eggs. They made their own corn meal but did buy their flour. She also said that they made their own soap.

William died February 20, 1901 and was buried at Russell Creek cemetery. "
