TWELFTH GENERATION

3838. Abraham Dit L'Ecossais Martin(1) was born in 1587 in Coureone ev de Sees, Perche, France. He died on 8 Sep 1664 in Hôtel-Dieu, Québec, Canada. He was buried on 8 Sep 1664 in Hôtel-Dieu, Québec, Canada. He Profession in "Maitre Pilote" (a master ship's navigator). Abraham Martin, our ancestor, is well known for having been, with Louis Hebert, one of the first colonists of Canada, and also for having bequeathed his name to the famous Plaines of Abraham. Abraham Martin, through his daughters, left many descendants. In the archives of the Dames Ursulines are the titles to two pieces of land which they owned. These were sold to the Ursulines of Quebec by the heirs of Mr. Abraham.

Abraham Martin's land received the name of "Plaines of Abraham," which name also extended to neighboring land, on which was Fought the famous battle between Wolfe and Montcalm.

In addition to the famous and historical Plaines of Quebec named after this illustrious colonist, as river pilot of the St. Laurence River, he was at the beginning of our national navy. As first pilot, it was he who provided the basic knowledge for the first map of the river.

We can easily imagine the danger of such an enterprise. Generally, it's because of shipwrecks that we arrive at locating a channel. The number of buoys placed there to mark a reef also bring to mind disasters.

It is interesting to note that the small boat which currently is still in service for the river pilots at Pointe-au-Pere, near Rimouski, carries the name of the first Canadian river pilot, "Abraham Martin." It was in service with the ship "Jalobert," name of the first French pilot who came to Canada with Cartier.
First land cultivator, and first pilot, Abraham Martin , because of his courage and his knowledge, cut a reputation for himself that is undying and our history will always guard his memory. The Historical Society of the Province of Quebec in June 1923, unveiled his monument at Quebec. A photo of this monument is in the files.

Family Tree Maker - Ancestors of Ryan Michaud states that Abraham Martin was born in Scotland in 1587. My records shown France as the birth place.

Abraham Martin, born Abt 1589; died September 08, 1664 in Quebec, PQ. He married Marguerite Langlois in France. Marguerite Langlois, died December 17, 1665 in Quebec, PQ. Notes for Abraham Martin: One of the first colonists of Canada and it is his farm called the "Plains of Abraham". The first baptisim in the registre of Notre-Dame of Quebec is for Abrahams son Eustache Martin. Abraham was a river pilot on the St Lawrence. Arrived in New France about 1619.

Abraham's farthers first name may have been Jean and not Abraham.

Notes for ABRAHAM Martin (dit L'Ecossais): Parents are Unknown. He arrived in Quebec in 1619, he passed time in France after the capture of Quebec by Kirke, July 24, 1629. He returned to Quebec in 1633 or 34. He was a "maitre pilote" (a master ship's navigator). Around 75 when he died. Burial: September 08, 1664, Quebec.

From a biography by Henry B. M. Best using sources: Collection de manuscripts relatifs à la Nouv.-France, I, 61. JR (Thwaites). P.-B. John Knox, " An historical journal of the campaigns in North America for the years 1757, 1758, 1759 & 1760" and others as follows:
MARTIN, ABRAHAM (dit " l'ÉCOSSAIS " or " Maître Abraham "), pilot; b. 1589 in France; d. 8 Sept. 1664 at Quebec.
Martin arrived in New France with his wife, Marguerite Langlois, her sister Francois and brother-in-law Pierre Desportes (the parents of Hélène Desportes) about 1620. Martin may have been of Scottish descent or he might have used the sobriquet if he had been enrolled in military service or had been a member of an illegal organization: such names were used for deserted soldiers or in case the records of an illegal organization were seized. It is also possible that he acquired the name because he had made several voyages to Scotland as a young man. There is some question as to whether Martin was really an official pilot or not, although he was referred to as "kings pilot" in his own day. However, he did fish well down into the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
It is presumed that the Plains (or Heights) of Abraham are named after Martin. It is picturesquely said that the "Côte d'Abraham" was the path that Martin used to the St. Charles River to water his animals. His property amounted to 32 acres in all, 12 received from the Compagnie de la Nouvelle-France in 1635 and 20 as a gift from Sieur Adrien du Chesne, ship's surgeon to Pierre Legardeur de Repentigny in 1645. This land was sold by the martin family to the Ursulines in 1667. It is possible that this is the same Martin who was employed by Jean De Biencourt and Du Gua de Monts as navigator on the coast of Acadia, although he would have been very young at that time. When David Kirk captured Quebec in 1629 and left his brother Lewis as governor until 1632, Martin and his family stayed on. In his later years Martin fell in the estimation of his fellow citizens when he was accused of improper conduct with regard to a young girl in Quebec. He was imprisoned for this on 15 Feb.1649.

As far as can be found from the records, Abraham Martin and Maire Langlois had 9 or 10 children. Anne Martin, born in France and married 17 Nov. 1635 to Jean Côté, was probably not Abraham's daughter. Eustache, baptized 24 Oct. 1621 and the godson of Eustache Boullé was the first child born in Canada. MARGUERITE, born 4 Jan. 1624 and Marie 22 May 1638 to ÉTIENNE RACINE had many descendants, including the 2 bishops Racine. Hèléne, born 21 June 1627, was a god-child of Samuel de Champlain. She married first Claude Étienne in 1640 and on 3 Sep. 1647 Médard Chouart Des Groseilliers. (Not mention here is Marie Martin, born 1632 and married 21 Jan. 1648 to Jean Cloutier. This from "Our French-Canadian Ancestors by Thomas J. Laforest, Vol. 5, pg. 58.) also not mentioned is [MADELEINE MARTIN b. ABOUT 1635 MARRIED NICOLAS FORGET 6 FEB. 1653 AT QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC. This data from research done by Mrs. Anita Coderre, GCRS, of Ottawa, Ontario.] Charles-Amador, born 7 March 1648, the godson of Charles de Saint-Étienne de La Tour, was the second Canadian-born priest. It is possible that Brother Dominque Scot, spoken of in the Jesuit Relations as having gone to the Huron country as a young man, was also a son. It is also possible that a young man who is mentioned as having been in the Huron country at the same time (1634-35) was Eustache Martin.

He was married to Marguerite Langlois in 1613 in St Jean de Montagne, Perche, France. Family Tree Maker - Ancestors of Ryan Michaud shows the year of Marriage as 1620. My records show the year of Marriage as 1613.
