A History of the SPENCE FAMILY of Western Pennsylvania
I am researching the SPENCE family of western Pennsylvania and other related ancestors. James Spence, the original immigrant from Northern Ireland was born about 1762 in Ulster and came to America with his wife and two sons between 1785 and 1790. They settled in Westmoreland County (now Indiana County) and worked the land and built a home. More children were born in America and the family grew. Today, Spence's can be found in nearly every county in western Pennsylvania west of the Allegheny Mountians. Other names are Bell, Black, Brandon, Calhoun, Campbell, Cederborg, Fairman, Fisher, Gibson, Hertlein, Humphrey, Johnston, Kriebel, Mason, Maze, Mumford, North, Pfeiffer, Swan and Wetzel.
If you think you are related to the Spence family, please contact me so that we can share genealogical data and information.
