Benjamin J. Stanton (b. Nov 19, 1832, d. Nov 21, 1899)

Benjamin J. Stanton (son of F. Stanton and Jacquilla) was born Nov 19, 1832 in Mt. Crawford, Rockingham Co., Virginia³⁶, and died Nov 21, 1899 in Shenandoah Co., Virginia³⁷. He married Mary J. Boude on Mar 12, 1857 in Mt. Clifton, Virginia³⁸, daughter of R.T.C. Boude and Elizabeth Ewing?.

Notes for Benjamin J. Stanton:
*1850 census. Lived in Rockbridge County, Va. Listed by the name Benami Stanton. Lived at the home of James Webb, a tailor by trade. At the age of 17, Benjamin was probably learning a trade (probably was indentured).

From Shenandoah Co. web site: B.J. Stanton married Mary Boude (my family records show her last name was Bower, will have to look into it) on March 12, 1857. B.J. was from Rockingham Co., Va. Mary from Swover Creek. Groom's father-F. Stanton, mother-Jacquilla, ?.

Benjamin was a soldier for the Confederate Army in the Civil War. Enlisted 4/18/1861 as a Private in Co. C(1st). Transfered to Co. F 10th Virginia Infantry in 4/1862. Was a POW on 5/12/1864 after Spotsylvania Court House battle, transfered to Deleware 5/20/1864, exchanged 9/28/1864, and paroled 4/17/1865.

About 1893 the Stanton's moved from Mt. Clifton, Ashby District, Shenandoah Co., to (near?) Bedford, Madison District, Shenandoah Co., and shortly after this move Benjamin became a Justice of the Peace for the Madison District. Benjamin was found dead in the road in November 1899, on a Tuesday morning after being in Liberty Furnace for a trial on Monday. He had left for home Monday evening after the trial. A coroner's jury inquest was held, and the verdict was death from heart failure.
