John Ayres petitioned for naturalization in Jackson County, MI on November 5, 1842 and the final date of his oath was 1846. Witnesses: James McFarlin and Lewis Rankin of Detroit. On November 5, 1842, John Ayres, acted as witness for the naturalization of William M Quenby.

Son Elvin Ayres, administrator, initiated the probate of John Ayres will on 10-7-1879. Fellow petitioners were William Jesse Ayres, Andrew Jackson Ayres, and John Bunyan Ayres, sons of the deceased and Anson Ayres, executor of said. The will is dated 12-2-1879, it states that John Ayres had lived in Lenawee County for the preceding thirty years. Acreage and $470 to Andrew Jackson Ayres. $470 to William Jesse Ayres, $470 to J William Queal, guardian of John Bunyan Ayres, Two Springfield lots to M E Church Society for church purposes. $500 to Elvin Ayres. Horses and $100 to William Jesse Ayres. All indebtedness to Anson Ayres.
