Attended Engineer OCS Fort Belvoir, Va and Current Affairs School in London, England. June 1941 Captain in the third wave at Utah Beach, Normandy, WI

Won the American Defense Service medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with one bronze arrowhead.

Biological Sketch

"Gilbert Vansant Royal was one of a se of twins born on 11-10-1917 in Detroit, MI to Mr and Mrs Silas Royal. At the age of two he moved with his family to Atlantic City. On his way home from Sunday School at the age of seven, he was run over by a truck and broke his leg. This event was to play havoc with his life in his later years.

During his high school years at Pleasntville High School, he was the star of several plays and the editor of his school paper. He received a schlorship and was drafted right out of college and sent to aviation school. He married Virginia Ayers on August 1, 1942 in Nashville, TN. He had met his future wife while attending Montclair. He then attended Officer Candiate School at Fort Belvoir, MD and left for Europe on July 25, 1943 on the Queen Mary for bridge building school in England. His first child was born 11-2-1943, four months after he left for Europe. He fought on D-Day with the 819 Engineering Division and won the Bronze Star and four other battle stars. After the army he went back to work for ALcoa Aluminum. (as a Sales Engineer) He now lives in Media, PA and has six grandchildren."
