from the note section of his file. The continuation is being placed here as it
deals with how Adelard got to meet, know and marry Ernestine Otis.)****** Now
I did notice a pretty little girl who would visit her uncle about once a month,
and then this pretty little girl's father eventually bought a house in Ste. Marguerite-Marie
and then the pretty little girl's family soon moved nearby. I was very pleased
about this as it created the perfect opportunity to get to know her even better
so I started to visit her from time to time. In addittion to being very pretty,
she was very neat in appearance and quite a pleasant and cordial young lady.
I was not allowed to visit during the week, as not to disturb the parents. Everybody
worked hard Monday thru Friday, so I settled for visiting her on weekends. This
was called "les frequentations" probably equivalent to having a gentleman
caller come by. Anyway in those days the "gentleman caller" was required
to spend the evening in the kitchen, accompanied by other family members. We
would chat and make small talk, or tell stories or play cards and then at about
9:00 P. M. or better still, when the master of the house would re-wind the house
clock, that was a definite sign that it was time to go home. It did not take
long before I was totally smitten with Mademoiselle Ernestine Otis. While returning
home, I would often see my renter and co-worker with his new wife sitting on
his lap and they would be rocking the evening away and they seemed to be so
happy. I kept telling myself, why can't that be me up there rocking away with
Ernestine on my lap, and that thought stayed with me all week long. Anyway, the
following week, I made myself as handsome as I possibly could and went to my
future in-laws house, knowing that Ernestine was ready to marry me "anytime"
and in those days most families were large and many parents were only too willing
to give their daughters up to a young man who could and would take care of them.
I asked Ernestine's dad for her hand in marriage, and he said, "If you
think that you can take good care of her" I am willing to let her go. I
said, hell yes, I can take good care of her and don't you worry one bit about
that. So then her dad gave us his blessing (c'est correct), and I felt very proud.
As soon as I got home, I could not contain myself. I said Francois!, I am getting
married, and he replied." Hey! wait for me". Hell, he did not even
have a girl-friend nor was I aware that he ever dated anyone. Francois said,
wait until tomorrow night and I'll let you know for sure. The next evening Francois
said, If you can wait until the 15th of July we can have a double marriage. I
said O. K. but was very curious as to whom my new sister-in-law would be. So
I asked him and he said Marie-Anne Laurencelle. This young lady would often come
to our home to visit with my sisters, and It was I who accompanied her home
in the evening. She worked for a "Pit" Deschenes. Anyway it certainly
did surprise me. Before Francois asked me to get married on the 15th of July,
I had planned on getting married on the 1st of July, but my future mother-in-law
told me " you cannot get married on the first of July because Ernestine
will be sick." I said to myself, damn! don't tell me that I am getting
married to a sickly woman that I will have to care for, for the rest of my life.
Then they explained that they were talking about a woman's monthly cycle and
I still was not quite sure what the hell that was. Nevertheless we did get married
on the 15th of July, the same day as my brother at Ste. Florence in Gaspesie,
P. Q. I dated (J' ai frequenté) Ernestine for about 3 months before we were
married. The morning of our wedding, the weather was perfect; it was an absolutely
gorgeous day. The church was about 16 miles away, and we traveled there by horse
& buggy very early in the morning. We were all so young and happy. After
the church wedding we returned to my parents house fairly late in the afternoon.
They were waiting for us along with about 30 guests. We did not receive any
wedding gifts or a dowery or anything like that. Had we waited for those things
we would have all died first. We had to get our own gifts and use our own money
etc. We spent our wedding night at my in-laws house. My mother in law came to
me again and said, do not touch her tonight because she is sick. Ah! the famous
sickness again. I had no idea what this mysterious sickness was, and why was
it that I had never heard of it before. I know that Ernestine was frightened
and dismayed to be "sick" on our wedding night. Anyway she began to
caresse me the following night, so I knew the mysterious "sickness"
must be over, and it did not take long for us to assume our duties as husband
and wife. After our marriage, we moved into our own house and I rented part
of it to boarders. All of the boarders were men who worked in the woods. My
father would hire hands for different jobs, from time to time, but I did not
want to work for him as I thought the pay was not good enough. I thought maybe
I can get jobs like my dad and hire workers, and then I would be in charge and
I would be making it on my own. There was a Monsieur Belanger who owned a saw-mill
in Ste. Florence for whom I had already worked. Monsieur Belanger said, "
St-Gelais I have a pretty big job for you, but it will take more than the one
horse you own, so come to my place and get a few more." I picked up a few
more horses and then went to the site that Monsieur Belanger told me about.
There was a camp already in place and I built another. Francois worked for me
and I hired quite a few more workers. I worked there for about 4 years, and the
company I worked for was from Rimouski. The camp where I worked was about 4 miles
from my home. My mother, Odille Ross was the mid-wife who delivered my first
three children. Germaine, Paul-Emile and Eugene. My childen were not cry-babies,
I worked days and was happy to see them in the evening. Germaine was born in
the morning, Paul-Emile between 2 and 3 in the afternoon, and Eugene at 3 in
the afternoon. My brother, Pierre was in Launay in Abitibi and we would write
to each other. One fine day he wrote to me saying, "Come Join me".
Gold has been discovered, and there are gold-mines just like in the west. This
news really lifted my spirits as I always wanted to go to Saskatchewan (Saskatoon)
where they always needed help for the mines. Anyway, I opted for Abitibi, mostly
because I would be joining Pierre. So one fine morning when I was about 23 years
old, I was working on my garden and my mother came by. I told her, "there
are way too many rocks around here" I am going to get a hernia if I continue
lifting them. I shall not pick up one more rock. My mother said "Good Lord!,
then what will you do?" So I replied, I shall go where there are no rocks.
That is when I decided to Join Pierre. This was in July of 1928. So I told Ernestine,
get ready, we are moving to Launay. We got there by train and we brought our
3 children with us. Eugene was only 3 months old. We brought most of our clothing
but did not bring any furniture as shipping charges were way too expensive in
those days. It took us three days to get to Launay. I had $900.00 with me which
was quite a lot of money in them days. After arriving in Launay we stayed with
my brother for a while. Pierre was married but did not have any children. The
both of us prospected and he had someone else prosptecting with him. We did
sell a few claims for $3, 000.00 and we each owned 100,000 shares in other claims
and things seemed to be going well for a while, but all the claims we had invested
in went "bust"so we ended up losing everything. This was during the"
Stock Market Crash" of 1929. Now before the crash, in the fall of 1928,
I had gone to work in the woods about 15 miles beyond Taschereau. We stayed
there until spring and then bought a house in Launay not too far from the railroad
tracks. And there, I went to work for the Winwrite mine. We worked 6 days per
week and 10 hours per day at $2.00 per day. I would walk 4 miles to and from
work every day. I was a driller and would bore holes up to 37 feet deep. And
all this was done by hand. After a while, I built myself a camp about 1 mile
from the mine so I would not have so far to walk everday. The mine eventually
went bankfrupt. I worked for the Winwrite mine for about 1 year. I then built
a second camp near the river at Ville Montel. I moved into this second camp
with my family as fresh water was close at hand. That winter my brother-in-law
Cyrille Otis and my cousin Joseph Caron along with a few other men came to me
for work. We would clear fields and lots, and by this time Ernestine had two
more children to care for. We had no modern conveniences, We hauled water, had
no electricity, needed to always have plenty of wood on hand for the stove, and
we hunted in order to have meat for food. In the spring, I returned to the house
that I had bought in Launay. Between 1929 & 1935 we almost starved to death.
We chased wild rabbits around just so we would have something to eat. There
was absolutely no work to be had anywhere. I finally went to work on the road
that goes from Senneterre to Louvicourt. I dug ditches and gutters with a hand
shovel for about 6 weeks at $1.00 per day. My family had stayed in Launay. They
then made me foreman and I was earning another .15 cents an hour. All things
considered, at that time, when one could earn $1.00 a day and net about $20.00
per month, now that was great. We always prayed that we would not have too many
rainy days, as you may well imagine, we did not get paid for "Rain days".
Anyway I then went to work on the road from Palmarole to Duparquet. I was now
earning $2.00 per day and was foreman. Back home in Launay there was still absolutely
no work whatsover. While doing this road work, most of the time we would sleep
in barns or whatever shelter we could find. I think I became bored or homesick
or both, so one fine Sunday morning I told my boss, "I am leaving this morning".
And the boss said, well when you do leave don't make any noise as the other men
will want to follow you.You know the other men consider you to be their leader.
I did not have enough money on me for a bus to Launay, so I walked from Palmarole
all the way to Macamic. Then I took a bus to Launay, which was about 27 miles
away. I was happy to be back home with my wife and children who had been left
alone all this time. I owned 2 houses in Launay. One had been given to me by
a Monsieur Veilleux who had left 2 of his sons age 14 & 15 in my care. He
sent me some money to have these two lads sent to him and said, keep my house
in Launay in exchange for room and board for my boys. I continued to live in
Launay for another 7 years and moved into the Veilleux house as it was smaller
and easier to heat. This second house was directly across from the school. I
was unable to sell the large house so finally gave it to the church so they could
convert it into a chapel. Once in a while the priest would come from Taschereau
to say the mass. Some of the residents still remaining when I left in 1935 for
Rouyn, P. Q. were: Madame Bedard, Madame Thibault, Pierre St-Gelais, Madame
Kirouac, & Jean-Louis Fournier. In the 7 years that I lived in Launay, many
hair raising events occurred. Let me tell you about a few. I had made a long
sled that was being pulled by my horse and it overturned somehow and the horse
ended up down an embankment and into a creek. My son Eugene was thrown face first
in the snow under a tree and he was only 9 months old. I had to cut the horses
harness and used large ropes to help free the horse who had become trapped in
the creek. We still had 15 miles to go, so our trip got off to a very bad start.
We finally got going again and prayed that all would end well. Another time
I had hired a man to cut down a few very tall evergreens. I was on my way home
from the mines, when I noticed that two of my children, Ti-Paul and Ti-Gene were
playing in the area where this tall tree was about to fall. I ran to them as
fast as I could as it appeared that the tree had fallen on them. Ti- Paul was
badly shaken up but seemed to be in one piece, but Ti-Gene was unable to get
up and walk, so I rushed him into the house and placed him on the bed. He was
conscious, and after cheking him out, there seemed to be nothing broken. What
a scare they gave me. As I was running to them I was screaming my children! my
children! have been killed. We were about 15 miles from any medical attention,
so I really tanked God for saving my children that day.*****Another time I was
digging a well and I had re-inforced the sides with boards as I feared that the
sides might cave in otherwise. I guess I had dug down at least 18 feet and I
am not sure exactly what happend, but managed to get stuck. I knew that our dog,
Bijou was in the yard so I kept calling him and the dog began to bark and bark
so finally Ernestine came out to see what the dog was barking about and she was
able to help me get free.(to be continued) Parents:
