Adelard St-Gelais collected many interesting genealogical and historical facts about the times and places of his parents: Edmond St-Gelais and Adele (Odille) Ross. Here is the information that Adelard passes on about them. I, Adelard St-Gelais, would like to introduce you to my parents. My Father, Edmond (Philomond) St-Gelais, born at Ste. Felicite in 1873, and deceased Jan 31, 1966 at 93 years and 1 month. Edmond was married Aug 9, 1892 at Les Mechins, P. Q. to Odille Ross, born at Ste. Felicite in 1870, and deceased Jan 4, 1960 at 90 years and 6 months old. The history of the parish where Edmond and Odille settled, begins with the Missionaries in 1917. The name of this new parish was" Fournierville" which had opened to colonization in 1915. In 1920 his Excellency Mgr. J. Romuald Leonard named the Parish at Fournierville, Ste. Marguerite,(there was no church there yet) and then in 1932, the Abbey, Jean-Baptiste Beaupre, first resident priest had the name changed to Ste. Marguerite-Marie.(this is after the church was built) In 1916 Edmond St-Gelais was living on Kempt road (sur le chemin Kempt). Edmond St-Gelais was one of the first 3 Syndics appointed by his Excellency Mgr. Georges Courchesne, the Arch-Bishop of Rimouski. During the celebration of Ste. Marguerite-Marie's 50th Anniversay a special tribute was made in honor of Edmond St-Gelais for being one of its first pioneers who settled there in 1917. As stated earlier, Edmond was appointed Syndic on 26 June, 1927; he was Commissioner of the School Board 1917 to 1935 (Commissaire d' Ecole) & President of the Municipality from 1918 to 1925. At that time there were about 100 families; among them, Adelard St-Gelais, Eugene Otis (Ernestine's father), Francois St-Gelais, Albert St-Gelais, Edmond St-Gelais and Pierre St-Gelais, to name a few. On Nov 11,1920, Edmond proposed that a fence be constructed and that a stove (une cheminee) be installed at school # 2. and on Nov 7, 1920, Edmond proposed that Francois Audit be in charge of lighting up the stove at school #1 at a cost of $15.00 per year. The Secretary being Joseph Rioux and the President being Edmont St-Gelais. On March 3, 1921, the President of the School Board, (President de la Commission Scolaire) Mr. Edmond St-Gelais, requested that the name of the town" Fournierville" be changed to" Ste. Marguerite". In his memoires, Adelard mentions that when he, Adelard was about 16 or 17 which would be about 1921 or 1922 he ran into his father, Edmond who was in charge of delivering mail in the area of Causapscal and that he held this position until 1939. In 1924 there were 50 families and 400 residents. In 1926, Edmond St-Gelais on lot 31, o.c.k. along with Adelard St-Gelais, Francois St-Gelais and Albert St-Gelais are among those mentioned in a petition that was submitted to the Minister of Colonization on Sept 18, 1926, requesting that "the settlement of" (le Canton de) Laverendrye be annexed to the already existing territory. In 1927, Edmond St-Gelais donated & ceded to the Abbey Beaupre,(for the Mission) about 20 acres of land which was detached from lot #27. This donated 20 acres became the site of the first chruch in Ste Marguerite, and later a school was built near the Church. Construction on the church began in June of 1927 and the first mass was celebrated on the 4th of September 1927 by the Abbey, Jean-Baptiste Beaupre. All the wood was donated by the "Colonists" (les Colons) The cost of construction was about $3,000.00. On Feb 11 1928, the very first child to be baptized in the new chapel was Henri-Paul Carrier. His godparents were Edmond St-Gelais and Odille Ross. On the 9th of April 1928, the first marriage was performed in the new church. The groom was Gerard Berube and the bride was Rose Otis, daughter of Eugene Otis and Philomene Pouliot. On May 20, 1928, Edmond St-Gelais, President of the commission along with the commissioners decided to have a third school built. On the 3rd of June, 1928, Edmond St-Gelais along with 2 other cyndics met at the office of Abbey Jean-Baptiste Beaupre to set the annual fee at $1.00 per year per family (Le prix des bancs) for the parishioners of Ste Marguerite-Marie. On the 20th or the 21st of Aug, 1929, the Arch-bishop arrived at the village at about 3:00 P.M. and by 4:00 P.M. he was visiting the new cemetery that all the residents worked very diligently to establish. On the 1st of November 1928, Edmond St. Gelais attended "the blessing" of the new cemetery. His wife, Odille built a "calvary" of attractive stones which included two stone statues and a very imposing crucifix. She was also reponsible for the lovely pathway made of concrete which was also lined with attractive stones. Odille also prepared many of the Epitaphs for the parishioners of Ste. Marguerite-Marie. In 1931 a school was built on lot # 27 that had been donated by Edmond St-Gelais. On 21 July 1932 Edmond was sworn in as President of the Commissioners for the Municipality of Ste. Marguerite-Marie by Emile Gendron, Secretary and Justice of the Peace. On Oct 14, 1931, Alphonse Deschenes request that the school board purchase a plot of land from Edmond St-Gelais for the purpose of building yet another school. Sept 17,1934, Edmond St-Gelais is a counselor for the Catholic Women's League. Edmond St-Gelais was a commissioner for the school board from 1917 to 1935. Noel Desrosiers was sworn in as Secretary-Treasurer for the Municipality on 25 November, 1951 before Edmond St-Gelais, Justice of the Peace. In 1938 Edmond St. Gelais was a member of the newly formed Catholic Action Committee. Parents: Francois (05) ST-GELAIS and Sarah CROUSSET.
