Moses Ekel Adams, born in Adams Hollow, son of George and Charlotte Carty Adams,
was the tenth of 11 children. Smallpox struck the family in 1862, Moses's parents,
a brother and a sister died from the disease. Moses was taken in at the age
of ten by James Dobbins, who owned a farm on the Black River near the point where
the three forks of Black River run together. He got his board which included
a place to stay and what he ate, his washing done, his work clothes furnished
and $5.00 a month in cash to spend the way he wanted. He had a horse to use
on his own free time.
When Moses got married to Mallissie Hamlet Campbell from Belleview, Missouri,
he had saved $100.00 which he had in $1.00 bills. He bought 40 acres of land
near Lesterville, Missouri, located near the mouth of the valley known as the
Adams Branch. It was mostly woodland at the time and it had a good spring on
it. Mose paid $25.00 for the 40 acres of land. It was custom at that time for
the parents to give their children something when they got married and since
Mose had lived with James Dobbins, he gave Mose a team of mules. They were hand-picked
by Mose. Their names were Beck and Betty, Dobbins also gave him a cow and a
sow to get a start of livestock. The land had a good stock of timber on it.
He cut logs to build a house to live in and a barn for his livestock. All this
work was done by him, his wife and children. The buildings were constructed
about the year 1875. These rememberances were written by grandson Ray R Adams
He was married to MALLISSIE HAMLET CAMPBELL on 12 Sep 1875.
