He was for many years engaged in the tiling trade previously to taking up farming south of town.

Nels entered the United States Army July 25, 1918, enlisting at Nevada, Iowa, and was attached as a private with the Cas. Detachment No. 26 of the 163rd Depot Brigade. Soon thereafter he was assigned to the 13th battalion Non-Commissioned officers school and qualified for a corporalcy of infantry. He was discharged January 8, 1919, at Camp Dodge Iowa.

Nels was united in marriage on January 6, 1931, to Sophia Suhr Owen.
