Dean Edward SUHR ⁽¹⁾ was born on 14 Feb 1926 in Bayard, Morrill County, NE.⁽⁵⁶⁾ He graduated on 19 May 1944 in Bayard, Morrill County, NE.⁽⁵⁷⁾ He died on 12 Jul 2002 in Scottsbluff, Scotts Bluff County, NE. He was buried on 17 Jul 2002 in Bayard, Morrill County, NE. Dean Edward Suhr was born on February 14, 1926 7:15 am to George Dewey Suhr
and Caroline Alzada Gartman, born in the first house north of the Bayard Cemetery on the
east side. He is the oldest of 2 sisters and 2 brothers. In 1931, he moved to Reddington
with his family, where they farmed during the dust bowl days until 1935. He started
elementary school at North Ward School of Bayard on September 5, 1931 at the age of 5
1/2 yrs. In 1935 they moved back to Bayard and his parents worked on the farm for
father-in-law, George H. Gartman. In the winter of 1936, they moved to town and his
father worked for Great Western Sugar during campaign. They bought a farm south of
Bayard from L.A. Fricke in February 1937. During his teen years he hauled sand from the
river for $1.25 a yard, then cleaned and graveled railroad cars. He worked part time
farming for neighbor Tom Durnal, but most of the time worked for his father. In 1940,
he graduated from eighth grade at District 13 School, Morrill County, NE. Entered High
School August 1940, participated in 4 yrs. of football and 2 yrs. of track. Received
Football Letter Award in 1943 and was Vice-president of the Junior Class and President
of the Senior Class. Graduated from Bayard High School May 1944. Farmed in Bayard
with father before going to College.

He than attended Engineering School from Sept. 1946 to March 1948 at Texas
State Trade School, Dallas, Texas completed early on progressive basis. Received a
degree in Radio Theory and received a First Class Radio Operators License on March 26,
1948. After college he worked for Northern Colorado Broadcasting, KCOL Radio, Ft.
Collins, Colorado, from April 1948 to July 1950. He enlisted in the Navy August 21,
1950 Greeley, Colorado. Served in the Korean War, serial number 373 21 25. He served
aboard the USS Boxer and the USS Yorktown. Attended service school in Memphis,
Tenn. 8 weeks AN P School- graduated 76 in class of 213, and 28 weeks Aviation
Electronics Technician Electronicsman School graduated 11 in class of 49. Received an
honorable discharge from the Navy June 16, 1954, was discharged from US Navrecsta,
TI, San Francisco, CA, rating of discharge was Aviation Electronics’ Technician Second
Class. He received the following service ribbons: Good Conduct, Korean Service, United
Nations, National Defense and received Honorman of his Company in November 1950.

After being discharged from the Navy he went to work for Frontier Broadcasting
Company, KFBC-TV in Cheyenne, Wyoming on July 5, 1954. Married Lavinia Low on
April 19, 1955 in Cheyenne, WY. Moved to Scottsbluff in the summer of 1955 where he
was instrumental in locating a signal and helping build the first television station,
KSTF-TV and held the title of Chief Engineer until November 1977, when he went to
work for TCI cable in Scottsbluff as Nebraska State Engineer. He retired in April 1990.
Soon after retirement he suffered a heart attack and was taken to Denver, CO for surgery
to clear blocked arteries. He went to work for New Care Incorporated, working on
oxygen equipment and later on went to work for Medical Equipment Specialties working
on oxygen equipment and handicap equipment, such as wheel chairs and lifts. He retired
from there in 1997.
