."Informiation on the Family of George Miller, the Pioneer"
Mrs. Nell (Miller) Petty Melson gives the following tradition: Our George Miller married
Elizabeth and moved from Lancaster County , Penn. to Virginia and then to
Kentucky. He was in the first census ofKentucky in 1790 in Fayette County, Kentucky.
Family tradition says that he moved from Lancaster, Garrard Co., KY about 1800 to what is
now Adair Co. This was handed down by the older members of the family, but they knew
little else about him.
(She quotes the 1790 Tax lists )
She continues: It seems very likely that this was the same George Miller, Getting closer to
Green County which became Adair. My close friend, Mrs. Mary (Miller) Welch searched
both Lincoln and Fayette County court records. She was sure he had service in the
Revolution but was unable to find the exact proof. A George Miller is listed in the Kentucky
Militia in Collins History , which is a standard work.
The fIrst official record which I have found on George Miller which I feel sure in yours
.George Miller 6CL (Continental Line)
George Miller Clark County Kentucky Militia Pension
,George Miller Kentucky Militia C (means Ky. Militia in Collins History)
The last is probably yours. He is listed as being in Jos. Bowman's Company in 1778.
During the years 1778- 79 Geo. Rogers Clark, Colonel at that time, was leading men across
the Ohio to battle the British in the 111. F orts which they had taken from the French. He
recruited men in Virginia and it is likely that he got George Miller from the area of Augusta
Co. Va. And that George took part in this fighting. The Fulson Club has the Geo. Rogers
Clark papers which should be studied for George Miller's name.
There is no record in Adair Co. of George's administration so we think it was recorded in
will Book 1 Cumberland Co. Kentucky which was destroyed by fire. He was deceased by
1805 when the following record was listed in Adair Co. Deed Book A 234, Feb. 4,1805,
Elizabeth Miller of Adair Co. Kentucky grants power of Attorney to John Miller of
Cumberland Co. Kentucky to act for me relative to the estate of Geo. Miller, my deceased
husband. The said john Miller and I were Executor and executrix of his estate. (This means
he had a will in Cumberland Co., not in Adair Co. )
Written and submitted to the Miller File, Adair County Library Adair County , Kentucky .
(Some of this seems to be documented but much of it is opinion)
I an not sure why she uses that tense ), with no proof, was when he took part in some surveys --=,
, made in this section, which from Green River to Cumberland River was reserved by Virginia
for the .men who saw service in the Revolution. In 1780 the task began of entering the
.surveying this land for soldiers and sailors. Surveyors were appointed by the state of
Virginia. The surveying began in 1786 with men helping the appointed surveyors. There is
a book in the office of the Secretary of State in the Capitol at Frankfort (KY) in the section
of the office that is called "The Land Office". This Book is called "The Virginia Military
Warrants" and is a record of all the surveys made for that purpose in the Kentucky Military
District. I copied many of them some years ago and saw the names of a number of men
helping, who had the same names as men who came to our section later. Among them was
George Miller and I thought probably that he, seeing this land while assisting in the surveys,
decided to come here to live. Here are the two surveys in which he took part as a chain
carrier: Page 66- Surveyed for Robert Todd rs (means registered surveyor) 422 acres and
entry on Military Warrants 692,778 and 1905 beginning on Green River, etc. signed Robert
Todd rs D.S. (Dep. Surv.) Dec. 1,1786. Chain carriers were Wm. Roberts, George Miller,
and Samuel Love, Marker .
Page 69- Surveyed for David Anderson 3200 acres on a military warrant #579 on Russell's
Creek at the mouth of Sulphur F ork, around the mouth of Glen's Creek Crossing Pettits
Fork. Signed Wm. Roberts D.S., Dec. 41786. Chain carriers were Robert Todd and George
Miller .
She continues: This entry is definitely your George. It has puzzled some people because it
is dated after his death but that often happened. He had the warrant of some kind but it
wasn't entered until after her died. Fayette County Kentucky entries, book 6, page 236 Oct.
10, 1806 Adair Co., Kentucky land on Crocus Creek to George Miller. There were two
other George Miller's as follows: page 129 George Miller 500 acres Bk 2, page 233 March
12,1783 on Bank Lick Creek and George Miller, 8000 acres Bk. 285, March 26,1686 on '.
Ohio River. Was this George, or another one? We do not know. Nothing had been found
so far about the land. Many times entries were lost in various ways, principally because of
earlier clams.
In the 1800 tax list of Kentucky there were seven George Millers listed:
George Miller Bourbon Co. 1800
George Miller Christian Co. 1800 (July 22)
George Miller Clark Co. 1800
George Miller Green Co. 1800 (This One is really ours )
George Miller Mercer Co. 1800
George Miller Muhlenberg Co. 1800
George Miller Washington Co. 1800
The only one of these names I have checked out was the one in Clark Co. Kentucky because
he was listed as having a militia pension. He was a different man.
In the Virginia Poster of Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution, By Gwathmey is the
.following listing of the name:
John Miller 6-23-1790
.Miller soldiers in the Revolutionary war: Daniel, William, Jacob, John, Thomas, Francis
from Bateomt?? Co. V A except Wm from Montgomery Co.VA.

Letter to me from Tammy Wilson/ decendant of Adam Miller-son of George & Elizabeth
Carma,
I have looked through my files concerning George Miller. I find that much of the information being posted & repeated
stems from work done years ago by Josie Mae Clark of Pocatello, ID. She visited my grandmother in 1957, and I
corresponded with her briefly in 1977. Bascically, what I have in the file is her family group sheet which I imagine you
have seen:
I have filled in some dates as supplied by material given to me by Neil Melson, who corresponded with my mother and
me for many years. We visited her at least twice in Kentucky.
I remember that Neil told us that the Millers came from Germany or Holland into Penn. then down to the
Shenandoah Valley and into Kentucky very early. She said the "original" Miller was Peter MuellerlMullar. I believed
him to be the father of George, but this could be off a generation or two.

Additional info trom the Russell Co., KY Historical Society July 2004:
Elizabeth's place of birth is unknown but they were in Virginia in the 1770s.
George Miller was in Revolutionary War, a private in the 6th Virginia Regiment under Capt. Samuel Kearsley's Co. of
Independents, commanded by Col. James Hendricks from July 1777 to Sept. 1777
He was apparently in Adair County , KY when it was formed ( 1802), he applied for a land grant of 200 acres, which
was in Adair, and which later became Russell County .
George Miller, wife Elizabeth and their son, Christopehr Mller, and his wife, Hannah Myers, are buried in the Miller
Cemetery, Russell Co. about 112 mile from Crocus, KY on the property of Sam New by (colored), beside New by Pond.
The stones are unmarked.
The cemetery is believed to be part of the 200 acres land patent no.8654 issued to George Miller on the 10th Feb.
1809 as recorded in Lands South of Green River by Charles O'Connell, Book 6, page 236 and signed by Secy of
State CHarles Scott, Gov. 1809. Green County Court Certificate No.194.
This grant was issued after the death of George Miller.
Have you ever visited Crocus, KY? I met up with a lady last summer at a conference by the name of Antie. She said
that the old Miller store building is still standing there. As you may know, the store is close to the Miller Cemetery , and
nearby is or was a large Miller house, probably about 100 years old now. That store has not been in operation since
1957 or so.
The "old" Miller burying grounds is on what was known as the NewbyFarm. In 1978, I visited Crocus and happened
upon a black man by the name of Sam Newby. He assured me that the graveyard (marked by rocks) over in the field
marked the resting place of the original George Miller & his slaves. There are about 15 gravesmarked. A pond is
nearby. After the Civil War, I understand, the Millers made provisions for the former slaves to remain and work the
farmland, ceding some land to them during Reconstruction. I believe that much of this land has been handed down to
the Newbys.
Adam Miller laid out the town of Crocus or Millersville in 1839, and though it never prospered, a post office existed
unti11859. It was discontinued, the town name changed to Crocus, and the post office re-opened by James Preston
Miller in 1885.
The Adam Miller homestead was once across the road from the post office in Crocus, and it was there had he had
17 children. It is said that Adam died of injuries after being kicked by a horse.
His widow, Jane, then married James W. Vermillion on Sept. 26, 1854 in Russell County .He was a widower with
several children. They came to Shelby County, Illinois in about 1858.
