Copy of letter from Peggy Sue Rhue McCarthy to Margaret Green Gower 7/5/1994

She was married to Seth Henry GOWER (son of James Henry GOWER and Francis E. NEAL). Seth Henry GOWER was born on Oct 11 1860 in Hyde Co., North Carolina. He was a Laborer- Cotton Mill in 1920 in Kinston, Lenoir Co., North Carolina. He resided 712 Atlantic Ave. in 1920 in Kinston, Lenoir Co., North Carolina. He appeared on the census in 1920 in Kinston, Lenoir Co., North Carolina. 58 in 1920. He died on Mar 6 1923 in Kinston, Lenoir Co., North Carolina. For many years we could not prove the birth or death of Seth Gower. We had a family story that he was the captain on a boat that serviced the sound in Hyde county and that he came ashore and died of Pneumonia. A couple of years ago my Mother advised that they had moved to Kinston and that he died in the great flu epidemic so we look in the Lenoir County records during that period and still did not find him. In March of 1998 I took my mother with me to the Lenoir County Courthouse and we searched each death record from 1917 to 1919 and still did not find Seth. The next day I decided to check the 1920 census to prove he was no longer living and thinking that was probably the closest I would ever get to the time of his death. Much to our surprise on the 1920 census Seth was still living in Kinston on Atlantic avenue. We went back to the Lenoir County Courthouse and started checking every death record from 1920 forward and finally found him in 1923. He had been incorrectly listed as Garner in the death index. We advised the clerk who told us the change would have to be approved by Raleigh so hopefully some day this will be corrected. At this time his death is listed in the death records of Lenoir County as Seth Henry Garner.
