William Swindle was the father of at least 22 children. William was born in
Laurens Co., S.C. but moved to Tuscaloosa Co., Al. before he was 10.
William's father, John Daniel Swindle, was one of the early settlers of Tuscaloosa
Co. William and his younger brother Daniel Swindle began at an early age to
help their father on his Warrior River farm. They cleared land with an ax and
cross cut saw. Sneaking logs out of the bottoms was a routine job for teenagers
in those early Alabama days.
In the early 1840's William Swindle, along with Samuel H. Simpson, William Cobb,
and Samuel Tubb, moved from Tuscaloosa Co. to Walker Co., Alabama, creating farms.
Walker Co., at that time, was thinly populated due to the lack of roads.
William married Harriet Elizabeth Busby on 10/30/1832. They settled on a farm
about 2 mile from present day Oakman Al. The home place is thought to be near
the banks of Cane Creek. It would be several decades before coal would be found
in an abundants a few feet below the red clay soil in which William was trying
to grow cotton and corn. Later this place would be known as Coal Valley, Alabama.
William and Harriet were married a little over a year when the witnessed, on
11/11/1833, a large meteor shower. There has been nothing like this pre dawn
meteor shower seen in the world since. "The saying "THE STARS FELL
ON ALABAMA" was based on this event.
In William and Harriet's day Oakman was known as "Day's Gap".
Harriet died about 1851.
In 1852, William married a second time to Susan Hogue. William was 40 and Susan
was 18.
William, his wife Susan, and two of their children were charter members of "The
Providence Baptist Church". Later they transferred there membership to
"The First Baptist Church" of Oakman, Al.
William was called "Pap" by his grandchildren.
Williams grave is in "The Swindle Cemetery" near Oakman, Al. The caption
on his tombstone reads: "TOO GOOD FOR EARTH, GOD CALLED HIM HOME".
