SWINDLE (photo) was born on Feb 2 1919 in Saragossa,
Walker Co., Alabama. He died on Jul 27 1990 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama.
He was buried on Jul 29 1990 in New Prospect Cemetery, Jasper, Walker Co., Alabama.
Buried on his Grandson, "Butch" Swindle's birthday. He was an Ingle
Iron, Drill Press Operater (Retired) in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama.
Left school after fourth grade, but could read and write.
George worked as a night watchman Murphy Mfg. in Jasper.
George worked in construction work in Jasper, Al. He worked with W.P.A. and
in strip minds. He worked on high places during construction @ Alabama Power
Gorges plant. He walked narrow beams. He worked for T.R. Simmons, laying pipe.
He dug ditches.
While digging ditches at Simmons he borrowed the money and bought a used car.
He was tired of walking. He was proud. On the way home the first day all tires
went flat. He had to walk home and get the mules to pull cat home. He had to
buy four tires that cost as much as the car.
Served in Army WW II. Army discharge info: Serial # 34-999-660 (Brown hair
and eyes)
2812 Engr. Petroleum Co. He was inducted 07/28/1944, Ft. McCullan, Al. His
military occupation was Pump Station Operator 220. Battles and campaigns in South
Pacific, Luzon, Rvukyus. Decorations were Philippine Liberation Ribbon with
a Bronze star.
After he returned home from war he tried to walk high beams again but couldn't
do it. He said he froze up.
Started working At Ingle Iron Works in Birmingham, Al. He commuted each day
Jasper to B'ham and back. He often rode with Marion Parrish, who got him the
job at Ingle's.
While working at Ingle Iron he was part of the construction of NASA's Saturn
rocket launch pad that went to Cape Canaveral, and was the launch pad for the
Saturn rocket missions that went to the moon. He also helped fabricate the Atlanta
Fulton County Baseball Stadium. Home of the Atlanta Braves Baseball team in Atlanta,
Georgia.
He retired from Ingle Iron abt 1968 due to heart problems. He had three heart
attacks.
He received Social Security Disability effective 09/02/1969, and a pension from
Ingle Iron.
After retirement he worked at a small vegetable stand in Powderly, Al. He would
go to the farmers market each morning and buy vegetables, bring them back to
the stand and selling them. He also enjoyed going to yard sales and trade days.
He bought and sold merchandise. He sold whatever he could make money on. He
worked out of his home and traveled to sales in the area.
George stayed active till 1987, when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. He
underwent Kemo Therapy and surgery with limited success. He died at his home
3353 Boise Avenue S.W., Birmingham, Al., with his family present, 07/27/1990.
He was married to Frances Eloise PARRISH (daughter of John
Ballard PARRISH and Lucy Green DUNAHOO) on Feb 6 1938 in Jasper,
Walker Co., Alabama. Frances Eloise PARRISH
(photo) was born on Nov 6 1922 in Jasper, Walker Co., Alabama. She was a
Daycare Cook abt 1880 till 07/23/1999 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama.
Worked At green Acres Baptist Church as a cook. She cooked lunch for the kids
that stayed at the daycare. She started working there in abt 1980 and is still
there now (1997).
Due to decreasing number of children she was laid off on 07/23/1999. When she
was married she lived on Pine Street, Bessivel, Jasper, Al. She worked for V.J.
Elmore in Jasper during WW II. The family moved to Birmingham, Al. in 1952 or
1953.
She started working at Green Acres Baptist Church in about 1980. George Payton
"Curley" SWINDLE and Frances Eloise PARRISH had the following children:
