High Tides - Hyde County Historical Society Journal
On 29 September 1756 John Swindell, Jr. received a patent for 640 acres in Hyde
County joining the edge of the savannah and the edge of the swamp. He received
another patent on the same day for 300 acres adjoining his own survey and a holler
in the swamp. John Swindell Jr., died a short time after his father. His Hyde
County will dated 3 April 1775, probate June Court 1775, mentions his wife Rebecca,
who married Benjamin Mason by March 1785 (son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Jones
Mason). Also mentioned in his will were his children Isaac (Sr.), Josiah (Jr.),
Jesse (Sr.), Joseph (Sr.), Joel (Sr.), Job, John, Ruth, Prudence, Rachal, and
Jonathan Swindell. Son Joel Swindell (Sr.) was to receive the house and 50 acre
plantation upon his mother's death, however, in March 1785 Rebecca and Benjamin
Mason sold the plantation to Richard Sanderson. We have been unable to identify
the parents of Mrs. Rebecca Swindell Mason.
He was married to Rebecca HARRIS before 1748. Joseph born in 1748.

Jesse SWINDLE was born in 1756 in Hyde Co., North Carolina. He died in 1778
in Hyde Co., North Carolina. A private in Aldersons company in the Continental
line of the American revolution. He enlisted in 1777 and was omitted in 1778
in a low state of health. The muster roll states he was omitted in 1778, when
in fact he was deceased. This is sported by a statement dated 11/06/1804 by
Joseph Osborn who swore he saw Swindell in the north ward in a hospital in a
low state of health and the next day the British seized the hospital, and he
believes Swindell died at that time.
Jesse never married or had any children. In his estate papers mentioned no widow
or children.
