878. John (C.) SWINDLE (photo) was born on May 23 1875 in Walker Co., Alabama. He died on May 23 1941 in Jasper, Walker Co., Alabama. He was an Operated a road grader, City of Jasper. in Jasper, Walker Co., Alabama. Was fortunate to have a good steady job working Monday through Friday, although pay was still low.. He retired from that job with heart problems. He was ill with Heart Dropsey in Jasper, Walker Co., Alabama. Caused him to retire from the city. John Swindle died at Peoples Hospital, Jasper, Al. He had a dime & a nickle on him in the hospital. Eloise Swindle has those coins now.

He was married to Sarah Jane BRADFORD (daughter of Andrew Jackson BRADFORD and Martha Ann SAPP) on Jan 3 1900 in Walker Co., Alabama. Sarah Jane BRADFORD (photo) was born on May 6 1881 in Lawernce Co., Alabama. Possible birth date of 05/1878, based on interviews with Stan Bradford 02/23/1997. The 1881 date came off the grave marker. She died on Dec 26 1953 in Jasper, Walker Co., Alabama. She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Jasper, Walker Co., Alabama. Lived on an Indian reservation in Decatur, Alabama. Came to Walker Co, Alabama by mule, then went back and moved family to Walker Co., Alabama. John (C.) SWINDLE and Sarah Jane BRADFORD had the following children:

child1416 vi. Sylvester "Syl" SWINDLE (photo) was born on Dec 10 1909. He died on Nov 17 1943 in Italy. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Jasper, Walker Co., Alabama. He was a Burton Mfg., Leather Worker.. At Burtons "Syl" helped make bridles and other leather products. Sylvester told all the kids he would give them a quarter if he could bite there Coubies. Coubies are ear lobes.

Sylvester was killed in Italy in WW II, during the invasion of Sicily. His body was not returned to Jasper, Alabama till September 1948. His body was laying on view when Charles Swindle was born on September 25, 1948. His funeral was held at North Side Baptist Church, and conducted by Rev. John Man. His Purple Heart medal was buried with his mother Sarah Bradford.
