Burgess was stern old man. One of his granddaughters has related
this: When Burgess was elderly he couldn't tolerate much noise.
Especially the kind the grandchildren made. The Brown's had a big
house with several rooms that made a neat circle through the house.
The children (of Ethel and Anne, Burgess' daughters) soon learned they could run a full circle chasing each other and not have to go out side. Burgess would soon tire of this
noise. To get the children to settle down he would simply stick out
his cane and trip one.
