He served in the military on 15 Jun 1915 in Winchester Rifles. Endorsement on MC shows probably volunteered for WW1 service reading "Recorded 15/6/1915 H.R.Addington Maj for Col. Officer i/c Rifle Records Winchester."

Public Record Office shows him as a private in the 17th Rifle Brigade. No medals were issued. Index card has been annotated "name removed therefrom. 100 letter sent". Archivist at Kew says this was a code and the Army destroyed all references to codes in 1918. Joyce & Elsie think he was discharged as unfit due to deafness. He witnessed on 17 Sep 1921 in Register Office, Islington. Witness to sister-in-law Betsey's marriage. He died on 16 Feb 1970 in Whittington Hospital, Islington, London.⁽⁵⁾ Bronchonpneumonia He was a Carman, Engineer's Labourer, Factory Porter.
