He moved to Reading,. Mass by 1644 where, in that year, he made a contract with the town to build a dam, turn the course of a stream, erect and maintain a water mill for the use of the inhabitants. He was a proprietor of Reading and a town officer, involved in a lawsuit about his mill in 1652. His wife Margaret sold the land and house in 1653. He is called by historian Bodge "among the wealthiest of the first settlers at Reading. (NEHGS "Register," Vol. 143, pg. 41) According to the "Genealogical History of the Town of Reading, Mass.," pp.106-07 John lived on the present site of Wakefield's rattan factory which is where he built the first grist-mill and fulling mill of the town. He also owned "much land" at the north end of the Great Pond and extending Easterly where he erected the first saw-mill. According to William Richard Cutter, New England Families Genealogical & Memorial, Third Series, Vol. IV, (orig. publ. NY, 1915;repr. by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1997), pg. 1881, John's first wife was Judith,Margaret was his second wife. No references are given for this conclusion. (Notes: GenealogyLibrary.com:Geneological History of the Town of Reading, Massachusetts,. pg. 18) First Election of surveyors of highways chose John Poole as one of such surveyors. 1644.-- The earliest records of the Town of Reading is the following, which was made at the latter end of the oldest book of records, the first few leaves fthereof being lost, viz.:-- " Articles agreed apon betwixt the towne on the one part and John Pooe on the other part, for the priviledge of a Water Mill, for the use and service of the towne:-- "1st. The aforesaid John Poole is to build the Mill and set it on the end of Sargent Marshall's lot by the Marsh Meadow; the same to be made fit for use, able to do the towns work, betwixt this and the 15th Aug. next ensuing; 2nd. The said John Poole is to continue and maintain the said Mill for use, able and sufficient for the townes use, from time to time, he and his assigns, and to repair the same at his own expense, cost, and charge. 3rd. The towne of Reading hath given and granted unto John Poole the liberty to bring the River out of its natural course, in such convenient place as may be most met, without trouble or disturbance. 4th. The towne hath given liberty to the said John Poole to choose and take such (land?) for the Mill, as shall be needed for the Mill in any lot or place about the ground. 5th. The towne doth also covenant with said John Poole to bring their corn to the mill 2 or 3 days in the week for grinding their grists, and not have him attend the whold week, unless more days are required to do the work; they do likewise covenant neither to set uo nor to 1663.--This year, Josselyn, an eccentric traveler, visited New England, and in his published account thereof says: " In the Centre of the county, by a great pond side, and not far from Woburn, is situated Reading; it hathe two mills, a saw mill and a corn mill, and is well stocked with cattell." N.B. The corn mill stood near where the rattan factory now is, and the saw mill stood on the site of the mill formerly known as Newcomb;s mill, at the northerly end of Vernon Street, in *South Reading. Both mills were originally built and owned by John Poole and his heirs. 1664.-- The town " exchanged lands with Matthew Edwards, he paying 30 shillings and a gallon of liquor to boot." Town gave John Smith, Jonathan Poole, John Browne, and William Cowdrey, " all the Slip or Tract of land (if there be any) that lyeth between the line that Bray Wilkins or his sons did run, which was the supposed line of Mas. He was the second captain of the Reading Company and "was much valued in Philip's Indian War." (King Philips War) He was Captain under Major Appleton at Hadley and was President of a Council of War in the winter of 1675-76. He served as a Selectman, a justice of the peace and representative. He died At the age of 44 in 1678. Captain Jonathan Poole is buried in what is now South Reading, Massachusetts, in the "Old Burial Place" there, his tombstone inscription reads. In the end of his life he fought several years with cancer, and with the heart problems on top of that he knew he hadn't much time left. So unlike most who give up and let go, George kept on fighting until he finished what he wanted to do in life. He traveled to the Grande Canyon with his family, and did many others things he hadnt gotten to do in life yet. At the time of his death, I think he felt he had done all that he wanted. George died cleaning his yard, he was found by a neighbor sitting up on the tailgate of his pickup truck, as if taking a snooze from all the hard work of mowing his grass. It reads as follows: Poor lighting and alcohol probably contributed to a power boat striking White's Bridge at Sebago Lake and killing two persons earlier this month. An autopsy performed by Dr. Sidney Branson on the boat's operator, Herman Poole, 44, of Buxton, showed a level of 0.25 per cent by weight of alcohol in his blood. Under state law, 0.15 per cent is considered prima facie, or presumptive, evidence that a subject is intoxicated. A survivor said, however, that he did not believe Poole was intoxicated. Dr. Branson also said that the cause of death was drowning, with a possible concussion incurred as Poole's 19 foot wooden Penn Yan slammed into a steel support shortly before 1 A.M. July 11. Area summer residents William Moses and Richard Demers said they saw the boat operating on the lake without lights just minutes before the crash. Moses said the bridge is very dark on the basin side. While two traffic lamps illuminate the road above for cars, the lights are on the opposite (Jordan Bay) side. The color of the steel supports is dell Maroon. A buoy which normally shows a flashing white light and is positioned about 25 feet to the Jordan Bay side has not been in operation for more than a month, Moses said. State Inland Fish and Game Warden Nathaniel Berry said that it is the responsibility of the State Parks and Recreation Department to maintain buoys and markers, but the department is extremely short-handed and has not checked the buoy since spring. A view of the wreckage of the craft, impounded while authorities certified ownership and registration, shows that the throttle was wide open at the moment of impact. However, Harvey Woodcock, 29, of Buxton, a survivor of the crash, said that the boat " wasn't going fast at all" when it hit the bridge. He believes the throttle was wide open because Poole was either going to power turn the boat, was going to switch it into reverse- or simply panicked when he noticed the bridge in front of him before he struck it. On the other hand, Warden Berry has estimated the vehicle's speed at about 20 to 25 miles per hour at the time of the accident. Experienced boaters at Richardson's Marina, while viewing the boats remains at a shed there, figured the vessel's speed at 30 to 35 mph. The boat was powered by a 115 HP, Mercury motor. Berry said that boats should not go faster than headwater speed through the narrow passage under the bridge, five to 10 mph. Moses, who was on his boat moored out on the basin part of the lake that night, said he sensed trouble when the Poole boat, while looping around the basin, twice came within 13 feet of hitting the bow. Moses quickly brought his own boat to the safety of the marina and was approaching the Poole boat, which had also pulled in, to find out why it had come so close to his boat, he said. the boat, however, took off before he could reach it, he added. Demers said he noticed the Poole vessel making unsuccessful and uncoordinated efforts at docking. Demers' rented cottage is directly opposite the slip involved. Demers said that the boat's operator snapped his hand line and hit the pilings several times before going out again. Woodcock says Poole docked perfectly, He added that Poole, who "could hold his liquor" had consumed " less than a six-pack of beer that evening." and in his opinion was not drunk. After one more loop around the basin, the boat crashed into the bridge. Moses, a high school teacher and swimming coach, was the first person at the scene of the accident. With the aid of two other young men, a human chain was formed to help two injured persons, including woodcock, to shore. The third was able to swim to shore under his own power. With the aid of a neighborhood resident's flashlight, they spotted Poole lying among the wreckage and pulled him to shore, but he was already dead, Moses said. The body of the boats fifth occupant, Franklin W. Junkins, 48, also of Buxton, was not retrieved until after daylight by sheriffs divers. Warden Berry says state law prohibits operating a boat while intoxicated. There are only three game wardens for Sebago Lake, he added, and each of them has an average of a dozen other lakes and ponds to patrol.
