Notes for Mary Elizabeth Wideman:
Once Chester left home to raft ties. Timber was a big industry in MO at that time. Railroad ties were fastened together (strapped around with split sapplings and nailed) and rafted down river. Well, Chester left to raft ties. He told Mary to charge groceries while he was away. He went past the local grocery store and left instructions that Mary would be charging groceries and he'd pay upon his return. When he came back by the store with his pay, he was told, "They didn't charge anything. They paid cash." Mary and the boys had done some timber work of their own. They had cut, hacked, hauled and sold ties themselves!![williams.FTW]
