"...then James' Mother, Martha Thomas Goldsby died first, then his brother, Edward T. w as killed in the Revolutionary War, then his father died, Actually Edward T. died of Small Po x caught in camp during the war, Feb. 3, 1778 and a bounty was allowed each private and othe r participant, which came to James Goldsby as the surviving male in that family in July 1799 , when William Matthews and William Goff before James Allen, C.G.V. Green Co., KY proved hims elf to be the heir of the two estates."

"James and Nancy Matthews Goldsby arrived in what is now the 12th District of Weakely Co . TN in the early 1820's, from Green Co., KY. Their three grown sons arrived about the sam e time. Edward and Isaiah settled in Henry Co., TN. Stephen and his wife, Deborah Akin Gold sby, settled
near his parents in the Centenary Area."

"James (Jr.) and his family evidently migrated to Menard Co., IL from KY. We have hi s letter to his brother Stephen in TN in 1844. ... Since he sends love to their Mother, broth ers, and sisters, but does not mention his Father, we can presume that James (Sr.) was dead b y this date."

Will of James Goldsby, dated March 29, 1836. State of Tennessee, Weakley Co.

I, James Goldsby of the state of Tennessee and county of Weakley, being of sound and perfe ct mind and memory do make and publish this my last Will & Testament: First. I order all m y just debts paid, Secondly I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Nancy (Mathews) Goldsb y the following property to wit: 1 negro woman Texas and one Negro man, Philip or $300. in c ash in the place of the two negroes, two beds and furniture, two cows and one horse beast, he r choice and as many farming tools as will answer her, one cubboard and furniture, one tabl e and furniture belonging to it, one desk, one trunk and one chest, and as many cooking vesse ls as will answer, two ewes and lambs, two sows and pigs, one flax wheel, one cotton wheel, a nd all the stock of provisions now on hand and all the raw materials for making cloth, cart a nd steers and setting chains, and as much of the farm as would do her, including the orchard , during her natural life, and at her death, the balance of the above named property to be so ld and divided equally among the legatees.
I so order my executors to keep as much money as will save this occupant where I now resi de, when it comes into market, and also I do order for that occupant where Nancy Goldsby no w resides saved for the benefit of John Goldsby's heirs and to be divided between them equall y, and further order whereas that my 4 only sons, that is now living to wit: Namely: Stephe n, James, Edward T. & Isaiah, that each of them have excepted to them two hundred dollars pre vious to this I wish to have out of each except to reduce fifty dollars. I further order unt o Elias Goldsby, son of Stephen Goldsby, a certain mare and colt, known by the name of said " Ellias' Filly" and all the stock of cattle that is in Stephen Goldsby's possession that is kn own by the name of Elias's name. I do further order that all the above named property and al so I further order that the said Elias' Claim. I do further order that all the above named p roperty and also I further that the said Elias' sisters nad brothers shall have a part of th e said have a said property also for Elias to pay from the season of the mare and out of th e stock of cattle.
I do order and nominate and hereby appoint, Robt. R. Gilbert and Stephen Goldsby, execut ors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other wills by me made .....my ha nd and seal..29 March, 1836.
