" Our eldest known for positive ancestor was Thomas Gouldsby 1, listed as having a pate nt to 195 acres of land in 1685 from Edward Cowles, Sr. ...The said tract beign a Paten t formerly given to Edward Cowles for 1250 acres dated 1661 but not recorded until after hi s death and until 1711 upon the petition of Thomas Cowels, Jr. by the General Court, and conv eyed by Capt. Thomas Cowles son and heir of the deceased Edward Cowles, Sr. Edward Cowles t o Thomas Gouldsby Sr., deceased father of the said Thomas Gouldsby, Jr. in the year 1685 an d recorded 1714. This Patent was granted under Govenor Spottswood in Janes City County, Virgi nia. Notation of this Patent was on page 169, Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. III, page 151 , for 1695 - 1732 by: Nell M Nugent. (Index to Patents and Land Grants in Virginia bk. 10.) "

City Co., By: Wm and Mary Quart'ly II, Vol. 18 , p. 112. Rent roll of James City had Thomas II in it. 1707."
