"Pioneer Baptist Preacher William Mathews (Mathis) Green Co., KY, wife Jemima, deed Bk 6, page 530 for love and affection, land on which they are now living to James Goldsby and wi fe Nancy, Dec. 29, 1813".....
..... "James Goldsby and William Matthews, Sr. here, were members of Brush Creek Bapti st Church in Green Co., KY. The Church was organized in 1791, on certainty of who was the 1s t. minister but Wm. Matthews was preaching there by 1804 thru 1813, may have been ill, 1814 A s his Will was probated 26 Aug. 1814 and he had already given his children, rather his daught ers land. Whether or not he had sons the will does not name them, nor do any deed found in G reen Co, KY" (Deed info provided by Mrs. Doris Bratcher, a descendant.)

Will of William Mathis dated Aug 7, 1814 probated Sept. 26, 1814
In the name of God, Amen
I, William Mathis, Senior, of Green County and State of Kentucky, being very weak in bod y but in perfect mind and memory calling to mind mortality of the body and that it is appoint ed for me to die. First I commit my soul to God who gave it and my body to be buried in th e common way by my friends. And as to my worldly estate that the Lord has blest me with I d o will that my beloved wife, Jamima, to have one bed and furniture extra and then one third o f all the estate now in my possession except my Negro man, Mark and Negro woman, Dinah. Th e said woman Dianah, I will, shall be set at liberty at my decease, the said Mark to he hire d to the owner of his wife, or somewhere near him and my wife to receive the wages while sh e lives and at her decease the said Mark shall be liberated. Also if my wife have any proper ty in possession at her decease it shall be equally divided among my children. I further wil l that all the lands and every other species of property now in my possession to be sold a t a credit of eighteen months and two thirds of the money to be equally divided among all m y children and that Edward Lewis execute this my last will and testament assisted by Johnso n Grayham.

N.B. I will that the said Mark be hired as before stated namely to the owner of his wife o r somwhere near him at the discreation of the said Lewis, Grayham and Garden, Executors of th is my last will and testament. Assigned and sealed in presence of before assigned I make th e following alteration that all my just debts be paid, if any, also that my Negro woman Dina h be hired out for the term of two years before she is set at liberty. Except my wife Jemima h should decease before that space. Also I do will that William Shasteed shall have one Bibl e and pair of specticles of my estate as witness my hand and seal this seventeenth day of Aug ust the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and fourteen.

At a couty court held for Green County at the courthouse in Greensburg this 26th day o f Sept. 1814, the written will of William Mathis deceased was produced into court by Edwar d Lewis and Johnson Grayham the ----- therein named and proven by the oaths of William Grayha m and Henry Hohamer to be the act and deed of the said William Mathis and that he was in perf ect mind and memory at the time of executing the same and the same is ordered to be recorde d which is done.
