Wilson, as he was known, was born and spent his youth in Tallahassee, Florida.
His father died when he was around three and he was raised by his mother and
her second husband, George Talbot Whitfield, who was Secretary to the Governor
of Florida. He married Mary Dodd and they moved to Coral Gables, Florida,
where he was a successful attorney.
