Swan Family
The family of Swan is of English origin, but the ancestors of the Swans who settled in Hanover and Paxtang Township, Lancaster County PA belonged to one of the one hundred English families whom King James of England placed in possession of an equal number of Irish confiscated Estates.

At what time Richard Swan emigrated with his family to America we have no account, nor of all his children, save the names of six sons.

Upon an examination of the records of the Land Department of the State, we have the following data, relating to early surveys in Lancaster County:

Alexander Swan had surveyed to him on the 23d of Jan. 1743, 150 acres in Hanover Township adjoining land of Andrew Lachin and others.

On the 15th of August 1767 there was surveyed to Hugh Swan 283 acres of land adjoining land of James Wallace, John Carson and the Blue Mountain in Paxtang Township.

To Moses Swan there was surveyed on the 8th of Nov. 1774 150 acres adjoining William McRoberts on the north, Andrew Carson on the east, John Jameson on the south and Alexander Johnson on the west in Paxtang Township.

We have no knowledge of the name of Richard Swan’s wife.

Joseph Swan born 1715, resided in Letterkenny township, Franklin County in 1786.

Richard Swan born 1725, settled in Philadelphia; a merchant and was one of the signers to the non importation resolutions of 1765.

Notes:
These records show that the Swan family was in Pennsylvania by 1743.
Another record says this family came to Lancaster County PA about 1738 from Ulster Province, Ireland.

Alexander3 Swan was the son of James2 Swan.

Hugh3 Swan was the oldest son of Moses2 Swan, born 1738.

Moses2 Swan was the son of Richard1 Swan.
