Family Origins

Van Lew, Dykstra, Barney, Holm and Associate Families Page

My research so far involves many names. The major surnames I am researching are: Barney, Brown, Conklin, Dykstra (Dijkstra), Erickson, Gordon, Heinz, Holm, Ross, Royer, Van Lew (Van Liew), Vierstra and Wheeler.

The Dykstra's and Vierstra's came from Friesland, the Netherlands in the early 1900's. The Holm's and Erickson's came from Finland also in the 1900's. I haven't found the immigrant ancestor for either the Royer or Brown lines. I am stuck on John Brown. Do you know how many John Brown's there are? Even in Charles City, Iowa in the 1800's???

My husband's family is from upstate New York which is where we find the surnames Barney, Conklin, Ross, Van Lew and Wheeler. I have found the immigrant ancestor for the Ross and Barney lines with help from the wonderful Town Historian in Warrensburg, NY.

Someday I hope to discover where my husband's ancestors immigrated from along with the origin of the surname. We have a few theories, but no facts - YET! I'll keep looking for I know that someday that piece of the puzzle will be discovered!
