5. Ida Mable BERGHUIS was born on 14 Aug 1901. She died on 13 Feb 1960 in Edgerton, Minnesota. She was buried on 16 Feb 1960 in Edgerton, Minnesota Hillside Cemetary. She was adopted. Born on a farm near Prinsburg, Minnesota. Family won a connect-the-dots contest prize sponsoired by newspaper for $1,000. Used this prize money to purchase farm in 1910 north of Edgerton, Minnesota. They lived on an old farm house on this farm as Jacob Berghuis build a new house by himself. He purchased the building material from Sear Roebuck & Co. This new house was a much larger house, containing two stairways to its second floor. The Berguis family lived in this house and on this farm for 20 years. I 1933 (Depression), the family was foreced to move off this farm due to financial hard times. They moved to Edgerton and lived in the Baker Salebarn. Jacob Berguis died there in Dec 1935. After her husband's death, Hattie bought a house on South Mechanic Street in Edgerton. - Lucille van den Bosch in personal writings to Lugene Henry van den Bosch

Ida had Rh-negative blood. Her husband, John had Rh-positive blood. The result was a Rh Disease in which, during Ida's pregnancy, and especially during labor and delivery, some of the fetus's Rh-positive red blood cells may get into the mother's blood stream. Since red blood cells containing the Rh factor are foreign to the mother's system, her body tires to fight them off by producing antibodies against them. This triggering of the mother's immune system is referred to as sensitization.

In Ida's first pregnancy with Henary wesley, there was little danger to the Rh-positive fetus because the baby is usually born before sensitization occurs, or at least before the mother produces substantial Rh anmtibodies. But, since sensitization occured, in each later pregnancy these material Rh antibodies crossed the lacenta and reached the fetus. Since each fetus had Rh-positive blood, the mother's antibodies destroyed the fetal blood cells. The result was a Rh Disease. This didsease leaves the woman with no symptoms and she is otherwise as healthy as ever. Note: Today, a simple test can tell if a woman is Rh-negative. Rh Disease can be prevented today. Unfortunately, this test and treatment was not available in the 1920s and 1930s. (Reference: March of Dimes Web-site, Public Health Education Information Sheet, 1999)
