My interest in researching my family roots is based on the belief that my Grandmother Bertha Pregnall Stanfield was a distant neice of Jefferson Davis. I would like very much to trace the family back to him if possible.
My Grandmother Bertha Mary Pregnall Stanfield grew up in Charleston, SC. She married my Grandfather, Henry Grady Stanfield and moved to Americus, GA.There they raised six (6)children, Charles, Martha, Leila, Elizabeth (my Mother), George, and Kathleen.
Her Great Grandfather Moses Fitts lived two miles from Allendale, SC and is buried in the family burying ground; property owned by Dr.Ogilivie. He had one Brother, David and two half-Brothers, Aaron and Capt. John Fitts. Capt. John is buried in Colonial Park, in Savannah,Ga. He also served in the House of Commons.
Moses Fitts had three sons & two daughters. One daughter died while in college. Valina Fitts married a Mr.Shoman and had several children.
Falworth Fitts married Miss Morton & lived in Augusta, Ga. They had one daughter. His second wife was a Mrs.McCormick, they lived in McCormick and died there.
Morton David Fitts (my Grandmother's Grandfather) was son of Moses Fitts and was born Dec. 6, 1830 on Skiding Island near Savannah and died Jan. 3, 1891 at Monroe, Ga.
