FIFTH GENERATION

26. James Marion BROWN was born on 27 Aug 1842 in Greene Co, IL. James is shown on the 1850 census for Greene Co, IL as 8 years old, living with his mother, 4 sisters and a brother. His state of birth is shown on the census as Kentucky.

The application for marriage license and the marriage license, received from the County Clerk of Greene County, Illinois, states that James was 33 years old at the time of his marriage. He could not write, and made his mark (X) on the official documents.

He and his wife, Sarah Ann Baker, lived in Greene Co, IL. They moved to Fern Glen Valley (aka - Chautauqua), Jersey Co, IL, where they built a log cabin. After James Marion died, Sarah Ann moved to Grafton, IL and their son, Tommy Tinker Brown, bought the property where his family grew up.

He was married to Sarah Ann BAKER on 20 Aug 1876 in Greene Co, IL. (124)(125)

27. Sarah Ann BAKER was born on 3 Sep 1857 in Greene Co, IL. The application for marriage license and the marriage license, received from the county clerk of Greene County, Illinois, states that Sarah was 18 years old at the time of her marriage.

child ii. Maryan BROWN was born on 14 Sep 1878. She died on 8 Oct 1878.
child iii. James Henry BROWN was born on 12 Nov 1878. He died on 18 Aug 1880.
child iv. Thomas Tinker BROWN was born on 27 Aug 1880 in St Charles, St Charles Co, MO. He died on 26 Oct 1975 in Chautauqua, Jersey Co, IL. He was buried in Valhalla Cem, Godfrey, IL.

From about 1905 to 1910, Thomas was the Captain of a river boat named "The Bachelor". He carried passengers, and sometimes cargo, up and down the Mississippi River, between Alton and Grafton, IL.

He then got a job as caretaker of Chautauqua, Jersey Co, IL. (Chautauqua was a summer resort on the Mississippi River near Grafton, IL.) He held this job for over 40 years, maintaining the water and electric systems for the entire village.

Tom's wife, Ollie Cain, died in 1947. Five years later, at the age of 72, he married Marie Blauwitz.
