(402) Henry I, aka Henry Beauclerk, and Henry, Lion of Justice, was an educated, stubborn, and prudent ruler, a good judge of men, who won the crown of England by a dash to the royal treasury at Winchester after the assassination of his brother, William II Rufus at New Forest. Henry appealed to the English nation with his "Coronation Charter" - a promise of reform.

Born in Normandy, or Selby, England. He Ruled England between 1100 and 1135. (1512) Henry, called Beauclerk, succeeded his brother, William II Rufus, as king of England in 1100. Henry I ruled until 1135, and was succeeded by Stephen, son of Mathilda and Stephen of Blois. He was buried on 1 Dec 1135 in Reading Abbey, Berkshire, England. He died on 1 Dec 1135 in St Denis-le-Fermont, Gisors, France. He was also known as Beauclerc; King Henry Ist of England; Henry the Lion of Justice. Gundred of Flanders (1052) The oldest brother, Robert (Curthose) inherited the Duchy of Normandy. The second brother, William Rufus, became King of England after the death of their father in 1087.
But William II died in 1100. Henry, taking advantage of the absence from England of brother Robert, had himself elected king by the witan. He issued a charter (later used as the basis of the Magna Carta); promising to follow the laws of England's Edward the Confessor. Repudiated the oppression of his brother, William II. And that the church would be
"free." He married Edith/Matilda/Maud of Scotland, and they had two children. She was daughter of Malcom III, King of Scotland, and the great granddaughter of King Edmund Ironside. Their two children were: 1. Prince William of England (1101-1120) who died in a shipwreck. 2. Matilda (1102-1164) who became Empress of Germany. Then married 2nd to Geoffrey Plantagenet, and founded the line of English succession, and became Queen of England. Henry I was considered to be a good and just King, and a good Christian. Robert, Earl of Caen (1090-1147) There were repudiated to be twenty "natural" children in all. English Historian, Ashley, stated "he surpassed all his predecessors in the tranquility of his rule, in his wealth, and in the great sums he laid out all over Christendome... He was easy of access and kept good order. "No one but an idiot was poor in those days.'" A contemporary, Peterborough, his chronicler said much the same thing..."He was a good man, and was held in great awe. In his days no man dared to wrong another. He made peace for man and beast." Henry I spent most of the last three years of his life in France, being a Norman at heart, and delighted in being a grandfather. He died in the Forest of Lyons, France, "following an excess of hunting and shell fish." This was 1 December 1135 in France.
