(245) He served in the War of 1812 as a private in Captain John Entrekin's
Company. Serving in the same company were Sergeant's Jacob Cryder, John Downs,
and David Downs,and Privates Jacob Immel, Benjamin Musselman, David Cryder,
James Downs and Israel Immel, all related by blood or marriage.
Accoding to "The History of Ross and Highland Counties", James,
accompanied by his brothers John, William, David and Thomas, and his sisters
Rebecca and Susanna, came to Ohio and located in Ross County soon after 1800.
James settled on McClain's hill, near Chillicothe, for a time. He there married
Annie Snodgrass, and bought the place now owned (1881) by his son James, in the
south part of Green Township, on the old Chillicothe road. At the time he came
here, the land was owned by Governor Thomas Worthington, and had some small clearings
made by squatters. At the death of James, his property was left to his children,
Sarah, Rebecca, Eliza, Harriet, Mary Ann, and James. The latter bought the interest
of his sisters, and now (1881) owns the home farm.
James and John Downs are listed on the 1810 Tax List for Ross County, Ohio.
They were living in Green Township.
Thomas Downs married, and after living in various places, died in Springfield
Township. David also died in the same place. William settled near Chillicothe.
Rebecca married Jacob Cryder, and settled in Springfield, while Susanna married
David Avis, and also settled in the vicinity. John went to the north part of
the state. Both James and John were in the War of 1812.
In "Abstracts of Estate Settlements, Probate Court, Ross County, Ohio, B
and C to 1850", compiled by Mrs. Marie Clark in the 1970's, is an abstract
of the Will of James Downs, dated 1848. In this abstract, his grandchildren,
Theodore and Lalcesta Cryder are named.
"The Downs Family of Virginia, Ohio & Indiana" says that James
and Annie were married in Virginia, in 1799.
He was married to Ann SNODGRASS about 1799 in Virginia.

Ross Co, OH. She was buried in Hopetown Cem, Springfield, Ross Co, OH. She
was sometimes called "Annie".
On 30 Aug 1832, Pickaway Co, OH Deed Book 11, shows John Downs and his wife,
Ann (Snodgrass) Downs sold their portion of the land inherited from Ann's father
William, to Rachel and Catherine Snodgrass. "late the estate of William
Snodgrass dec'd, who departed this life intestate leaving six children, and where
as Mary Snodgrass on of said children is also lately dec'd intestate leaving
no issue... Ann one of her sisters..."
