FIFTH GENERATION
30. John H. CAIN
(140)(49)
(141)
(142)(57) was born in Dec 1842
in Overton Co, TN.(57) He served in the
military between 1 Dec 1862 and 10 Jul 1863.(54)
Jack enlisted in Co F, 84th Tennessee Infantry on 1 December 1862. His
unit was merged with several others to form Co K, 28th (Consolidated) Tennessee
Infantry. He was listed as "Absent Without Leave" on 10 July 1863.
Thomas and his son John (Jack) served in the Confederate Army. According to the
family's oral history, John killed a Confederate officer. It happened one rainy
night when he was on guard duty. He had been told that if anyone approached his
area, he was to shout "Halt!", and if the individual approaching did
not stop and identify himself, Jack was to shoot to kill. A man on horseback
came up to him. Johnny asked him to dismount to be recognized. The ground was
muddy, and the rider was an officer of the Confederacy. He refused to dismount
and Johnny shot and killed him. The officer was from a wealthy local family,
and he knew he would be court martialed for killing an officer even though he
had acted as ordered. Family stories relate that Jack was able to escape and
the family kept him hidden in a cave for about two weeks. Later, he was smuggled
out of Tennessee in the false bottom of a wagon. He fled to his Aunt Celina Little's
house in Greene County, Illinois. Jack's military file (obtained from the National
Archives in Washington D.C. by Betty Lawrence) listed him as "Absent Without
Leave" since 10 July 1863. This leaves one to believe that the story is
probably true. Had he not followed orders he might well have faced a court martial,
so he had no choice.
The following information was obtained at the National Archives in Washington
D.C. in August 1983 by Betty and Warren Lawrence:
"CO K, 28 CONSOLIDATED TENN INF"
"JULY AND AUGUST 1863"
"COMPANY COMMANDERS REPORT"
"Company stationed at Chattenooga. Have marched from Tullahoma, Tennessee
to Chattanooga. Distance of 85 miles. Since 30 June, the time we should have
been mustered last. J.G. Maxwell"
He died in 1906 in Mt Auburn, Christian Co, IL. He was buried in 1906 in Christian
Cem, Mt. Auburn, Christian Co, IL. He was sometimes called Johnny or Jack.
The 1850 census for Overton Co, TN lists John as 7 years old, living with his
parents.
The 1870 census for Greene Co, IL, shows John and his wife, Mary Ann Thaxton
(listed as Ann on the census), living with his sister, Amanda (Cain) Bartlett,
and her husband, Marion. Apparently, John and Mary were recently married (within
the census year), but the month of the marriage is not readable. It has since
been discovered that they were married 9 Dec 1869 in Christian County, IL. They
were living next to John's parents (Thomas and Mary Cain). Also located on this
census, was his aunt, Selina Little, and her husband, Eliza, with seven of their
children. Another of John's aunt's, Emaline, was living with her sister, Selina.
Located on the 1900 Census for Greene Co, IL. The census shows John as 57 years
old, born in Dec 1842. He was working as a day laborer. John had been married
for 30 years and was living in a home he had rented. That would put his marriage
at 1870, not 1869, as was previously thought.
Research conducted by Carolyn Leonard Jones Bettis, a distant cousin of Ann Louise
Howell, found an article written by an Honorable Fred J. Gray, about five living
generations of Amanda (Cain) Bartlett. He writes: "She comes from a fine
old southern family. She was born in Overton County, Tennessee, near Livingston,
Tennessee. Her father, Thomas Cain, was first cousin to Stonewall Jackson and
Wade Hampton. (We have not verified this fact.) She married Francis Marion Bartlett
and moved to Greene County, Illinois, where their children were born. Amanda
lived to see five great great grandchildren." A copy of this letter is in
the files of James Charles Mayhall. This story is included because the relatives
of Amanda, and the early facts about her, are the same about her brother, John
H. (Jack) Cain.
See reprint of a letter written by John Cain to his cousin, J.C. Thompson, in
1873.
He was married to Mary Ann THAXTON on 9 Dec 1869 in Christian Co, IL.
(143) 31.
Mary Ann THAXTON(144)
(145)(57) was born in Mar 1852
in Greenfield, Greene Co, IL.(57) She
was Irish and German.
The Thaxtons were farmers in Greenfield, Illinois. Some Thaxtons still live
in that area.
The 1870 census shows John and his wife, Mary Ann Thaxton (listed as Ann on the
census), living with John's sister, Amanda (Cain) Bartlett, and her husband,
Marion. Apparently, John and Mary were recently married (within the census year),
but the month of the marriage is not readable. It has since been discovered
that they were married 9 Dec 1869 in Christian County, IL. They were living next
to John's parents (Thomas and Mary Cain), in Greene Co, IL.
Located on the 1900 Census for Greene Co, IL. The census shows Mary as 48 years
old, born in Mar 1852. Mary had been married for 30 years and was living in
a rented home. She had 10 children, 5 of which were still living. There were
two families of Thaxton's living next to Mary and John. They are possibly relatives
of Mary and her father, James Thaxton.
