TENTH GENERATION

964. Jacob GOODPASTURE (373) (374)(375) was born about 1710 in Kappel, Zugcanton, Switzerland. He died on 10 Nov 1766 in Augusta Co, VA. Vol I of "Reference Genealogies of Virginia Families" by Tyler, states that Jacob immigragted from Wales in 1753. The accuracy of this statement is not known.

A land survey for Jacob Goodpasture at Brock's Gap, Rockingham County, Virginia in 1753 is, so far, the earliest Goodpasture record found in North America. 13 December 1753, Survey of land for Jacob Goodpasture at Brock's Gap on Tunis Creek, same transferred to John Runyon (Runion).

Jacob Goodpasture, who appears of record at Brock's Gap, Rockingham County (then part of Augusta County), Virginia in 1753, is known to have left an orphan son, Abraham, upon his death in 1766. No other children are of record. 19 November 1766, Daniel Pierce was bonded, with Peter Hog, as administrator of the estate of Jacob Goodpasture. 7 January 1767, Jacob Goodpasture's estate is appraised by Thomas Poage, Daniel Dennison and William Wallace. On 22 August 1768, Jacob's estate is settled by Daniel Pierce. He paid Isaac Blackfield and John Bealey.

For some reason the estate sued John Runyon. It is believed that it had something to do with the survey and transfer of land of Jacob Goodpasture in 1753. It is also believed that this land was returned to Solomon Goodpasture as it was again surveyed. A Solomon Goodpasture appears, of record, at Brock's Gap in 1773. His relationship to Jacob is unknown, perhaps a brother - probably an older son. In 1773, a survey of 70 acres of land on Tunis Creek, near Brock's Gap, was made for Solomon Goodpasture. From descriptions, this land appears to be the same (less 20 acres to John Runion) that Jacob had surveyed. From this, one could conclude that Solomon was also a son of Jacob and of age at his father's death in 1766; hence born before 1746.

The Vollenweider connection is not proven, it is only theory at this time. Although it would make a great fit, much more research will have to be done to prove that Jacob Goodpasture was Jacob Vollenweider. Vollenweider means good pasture in German, and refers to an exceptionally good horse pasture. Time will tell.

965. Maria SCHMID was born about 1712 in Augusta Co, VA. Children were:

child482 i. Solomon GOODPASTER Sr..
child ii. Abraham GOODPASTURE Sr.(376) (377)(378) (379) was born between 1750 and 1755 in Augusta Co, VA. He served in the military about 1782. Abraham served in the militia in 1782.

He died about 1829 in Overton Co, TN. In early records, Abraham was known by the name of James. Research of Virginia records have, in later years, proven the name "Abraham" to be correct.

19 Nov 1776,   Abraham Goodpasture, orphan of Jacob Goodpasture, to be bound to Danl. Pierce, to be taught to be a carpenter.

According to the "History of Southwest Virginia 1746-1786 & Washington County 1777-1870", Abraham built the Washington County, VA Jail. I quote the reference here:

"Pursuant to this order, the sheriff of the county let the contract for the building of the county courthouse to Samuel Evans; to Abraham Goodpasture, the building of a prison...." 27 Aug 1777.... "to build a prison fourteen feet square, with square timber, twelve inches each way, and a good shingle roof, with directions to line the side wall and under floor with two-inch plank, and put nine iron spikes in each plank, six inches long in lieu of a stone wall."

26 Jun 1806, Deed Book A, Page 23, Abraham deeded 100 acres to John Goodpasture of Jackson County, Tennessee, land on the waters of Roaring River.
