A commercial fisherman, he lived on a houseboat that was tied up at Portage
Des Sioux, St Charles Co, MO, where James Franklin was born. The family then
moved to Chautauqua, Jersey Co, IL, where he had built a small log cabin. Chautauqua
was a summer resort for the wealthy of St. Louis, MO and Alton, IL. James worked
for the Chautauqua Association. The Association sent him to Grafton, IL, (in
1910) to have some tools sharpened. As he walked the railroad tracks to Grafton,
he was pulled under a passing train. James lost the toes on one foot and one
leg was cut off at the knee. Thereafter, he made a living selling fresh fruit
and vegetables that he grew in the summer, and trapping in the winter. Sometimes
he would catch a honey bee, stick a small chicken feather on its back so it would
fly slow, then follow it through the woods to it's hive. He would then mark the
tree so he could return in the winter and cut it down for the honey.
James lived in Chautauqua for 41 years, and was known as Henry Mayhall. He raised
a large family without any aid from the State.
