About Our Family Research


Joseph Walter was born 1782 in Sarrebourg, Loraine, France. He arrived in Magyarovar, Hungary as a soldier in Napolean's Army. After the battle of Wagram on July 5/6, 1809, Joseph became ill and was left behind in Magyarkimle. He worked for a time as a joiner (carpenter) and married Anne Trelinger in 1831. Joseph and Anne had nine children. Their son Johannes Walter was born 1821 in Magyarkimle, Hungary. Johannes married Elizabeth Eller in 1844. Johannes and Elizabeth had 12 children. Their son Johannes Walter was born 1850 in Magyarkimle, Hungary. Johannes married Elizabeth Lurwig in 1870. Johannes and Elizabeth had 12 children. Johannes emigrated to the United States from Hungary in 1890 and settled in Dunkirk, NY. His son, Wilhelm Walter and his wife Rosa were living in Kimle, Moson County, Hungary when they decided to leave the homeland for the promise of a better life in America. Wilhelm, Rosa and their three children Johann (John), Stefan (Stephen), and Emilia(Mildred) arrived at Ellis Island aboard the S.S. Rotterdam on April 5, 1905. Wilhelm and his family joined Johannes in Dunkirk but later moved to Buffalo, NY. Wilhelm and Rosa had seven other children who were William, Francis, Eleanor, Edward, Ernest, Marion and Elizabeth.
