Notes for Thomas JOSLIN:
SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION FILE FOR:- ------------------------------------
PERSON # 114 NAME: Thomas JOSLIN SOURCES OF INFORMATION(e.g.
Church/Govt. Dept. etc.): TYPES OF INFORMATION(e.g. Birth
Certificate/Gravestone):
Variously describd as husbandman or labourer and living variously at
Bolts, Hole-Park, Knaplocks and Lower Crabbaton. 1851 Census shows him
living with his family at Lower Crabadown,
Ashreigny. 1861 Census shows him a widower living with his
daughter, Honor at Docketts House near Ashreigny. Letter from Doug Joslin
states that Thomas
emigrated to Canada in April 1852 with daughter Annie ,
her husband Rober Turner & possibly sons Samuel ,
John & William. Wife, Honor must have been
near death when they left because because shortly after arrival in
Toronto 11/6/1852
there was a letter saying that she had died. Why did he go?
What was wrong with Honor & why did he leave her? Was she sick
when he left? Interestingly he did not stay in Canada long because
1861 Census shows him liiving with daughter Honor Perhaps
the winters were too cold and/or conditions too rough. 3/8/95 In the
light of new information it would seem that he had planned to settle in
Canada & send for the rest of the family. The sudden & unforseen death of
his wife causd him to return to this country & he never returned to
Canada. A report states - "Many went from Bristol and smaller ports in
Devon. There were ships which had imported timber and would have returned
to Canada otherwise empty. Also there were many who sailed from Plymouth
in conditions that were sometimes squalid. In the Devon Weekly Times of
June 1873 it is reported that Mr. G.R. Kingwell, a special Canadian
agent, gave an address at Okehampton in which he advised those working
classes who had determined on going, to proceed from Liverpool to Quebec
on the Allan line of steamships as they could then get their six guinea
ticket for £4.15/-, the government of the Dominion paying the balance of
£1-11/- ; agricultural labourers and families cheaper. They could also be
forwarded from Quebec to the interior free of expense and receive in
Ontario a state grant of £1 .5/-.
There is a report in the North Devon Journal Herald dated 4/9/1862 which
COULD relate to Thomas & his brother Robert. " Torrington. Wednesday
Sept. 3rd. Thomas Joslin v. Robert Joslin. The parties were from
Ashreigny, and the demand was for the value of half-hogshead of cider
sold to the defendant by plaintiff, which was to be taken away in small
portions. It appeared that the liquor did not improve in keeping, and
defendant left a portion of it on plaintiff's hands. Judgement for the
amount claimed."
There is a further report in the NDJH dated 14/11/1861 which also COULD
be this Thomas." County Courts. Torrington. Wednesday November 6th.
Thomas Joslin v. June Ripping. These parties were both from Ringash and
the action was to recover £9-19s.-1d. for work and labour. Mr.
R.D.Kingdon appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. L. Bencraft for the
defendant. The defendant, the widow of the person from whom the debt was
due had, since her husband's death, offered the plaintif the money, less
a set-off of £1-2s-1d but he refused to take it without the whole. His
Honour said in times past the letter of the law with respect to what was
legal tender, 'was stuck to rather closely, which tended to put a good
deal of money in the pockets of the lawyers.' but if he found a tender
had been honestly made and the party might have had their money if they
liked, but refused it, he took that into consideration in awarding costs;
and in this case he would give judgement for the plaintiff for the
balance due without costs/"
