PERSON # 121 NAME: Thomas JOSLIN SOURCES OF INFORMATION(e.g.
Church/Govt. Dept. etc.): TYPES OF INFORMATION(e.g. Birth
Certificate/Gravestone):
1851 Census shows him, aged 8, living at Lower Crabadown, Ashreigny,
with his family. Letter from Doug Joslin dated 11/2/1995. He is
g.grandson. Thomas was born at Crabbaton Farm & emigrated to Canada in
April 1852 with his married sister, Annie & her husband Robert Turner,
with his father & possibly his brothers Samuel, John & William. He
arrived in Toronto the day after his tenth birthday and there was a
letter waiting telling them that his mother, Honor, had died.Doug states
that, in addtion to the surviving children, 2 boys and 2 girls died
young.Note from Doug " He came to Canada in a sailing ship from Exeter
early in April 1852 with his father and his sister Annie aged 22 and her
husband Robert Turner aged 37. The ocean journey and crossing were
lengthy and they arrived in Toronto on June 8 1852 two days after his
tenth birthday". On his father's return to UK following mother's death,
he was left in the care of Annie and Robert Turner. "After living with
the Turners for a time Thomas was apprenticed to a farmer on Yonge Street
near Lancing or Langstaff. On expiration of his apprenticeship he left
the farm but continued working as a farm labourer gradually moving
northward on Yonge street until, at the age of 18, in 1861, he was in
West Gwillimbury. It was there he met Sarah Ady and they were married at
St John';s Presbyterinan Church, Coulson's Hill, Ontario November 17th.
1866. Two years after their marriage Thomas & Sarah moved to Oro township
together with Sarah's mother, Rebecca, and her brothers John & Joseph, &
farmed on lot 25 S 1/2 & BF lot 26 E in Concession 9. They farmed here
until 1870 & it was here that their first child Joseph Thomas, ( Tom or
Young Tom) was born on December 6 1868. The farm consisted of 129 acres;
the lake frontage BF Lot 26 was stony & the back part, Lot 25 S 1/2 was
swampy. All in all they had only forty to fifty acres of good farm land.
Township assessment Rolls for 1868 & 1869 show Thomas to be a tenant of
John Alexander of Barrie & the Roll for 1870 shows him to be a reeholder
(owner) with 2 cows, 8 sheep & 2 horses. As there was not sufficient
arable land for them to actually get ahead, although they did save some
money & had acumulated some livestock, Thomas worked on various district
farms for extra income. While they prospered somewhat progress was slow &
Thomas wished to farm full time. So, when Dalton Township, in Victoria
County, was opened for settlement he visited the area & purchased 100
acres. The years in Oro & the sale of some of his livestock allowed him
to pay cash for the property in Dalton with enough money left over to
keep them until the farm could be made self supporting. The 1871 Census,
taken in April, shows they had no livestock, crop, barn or stable &
harvested only two cords of firewod during their first winter in Dalton.
They are listed among the original settlers of Dalton Township in the
Centennial History of Victorial County by Watson Kirkconnell & it was a
giant step forward for them to leave the comparatively well settled &
developed farms of Ooro for the unsettled & undeveloped wilderness of
Dalton Township. The move was made by Thomas, Sarah & Young Tom by ox
team with their household goods on a sleigh & their livestock, one milk
cow, following behind in the late fall of 1870. However they were only
able to get within a mile of their house with the ox team as the snow in
the bush between Concession 8 & the farm site, Lot 23, Concession 9, was
too deep for the oxen & the balance of the trip was made with the stove &
other necessities on a hand sleigh. The cow, oxen & other goods had to be
left with the Ketts who had a short time previously located on Lot 26,
Concession 8. Very little is known of their first years on the farm which
originally consisted of 100 acres & later additional lots were purchased
on Concessions 9 & 10. The original Lot cost .50 cents an acre with the
obligation to clear & develop a certain acreage. While even at that early
date the best of the white pine had been cut there was a heavy growth of
of hardwood & small softwood, & pine stumps to be removed before any
farming could take place. The pine stumps became the fences around the
fields & are still in place to this day.
Between 1870 & 1890 seven children were born but only three boys
survived beyond birth & infancy. The 4 infants who failed to survive were
buried on the farm on a slight ridge between the farm buildings & the
large ridge of rock to the north of the property. During this period a
larger house & barn & stable were built & as the land was cleared &
larger crops planted, newer & improved farm machinery was purchased. As
the other farms in th area became more productive & produced larger
yields of grain Thomas started custom cropping with a threshing machine
brought in from Oro. Times were not always good though, for in 1888 a
forest fire swept through the area north of the farm to Cooper's Falls &
the large barn which had been built a few years previous to replace the
the original structure was destroyed along with much of the farm
machinery, including the threshing machine. Fortunately a change in wind
direction and the small creek separating the house & barn allowed the
house to be saved.
They continued to farm 200 acres on the home farm & 100 acres where
their son 'Young Tom' had lived. In 1906 they retired to Coopers Falls.
They lived with Silas & Libbie because of Sarah's failing health. He
continued to live there for a few years after her death then returned to
the home farm to stay with Jack & Nell. He subsequently went to live in
Hawkestone to live with Tom & Addie where he died aged 87. He is buried
with his wife, Sarah, at St Andrews/ St James Cemetary, Orillia.
