Doug's notes stae :- Roy worked on local farms & in the stores & the
creamery after school & on Saturdays & on holidays until he finished
school. As there was a shortage of workmen due to the war, he went to
Windermere House in Muskoka to work. After a summer there, & at the
urging of his mother, he entered Barrie Business College in the fall of
1917. As he did not have enough money for tuition & living expenses he
was forced to suspend his studies & worked on the construction of the
Trent Canal at Washago for part of 1918 & 1919 & did not graduate from
business college until the Spring of 1920. Barrie was then a busy railway
junction & after being employed there for a short time by the Canadian
Northern Express Company, he went to Toronto to the Express Department of
the Grand Trunk Railway where wages were higher & the opportunity for
advancement was greater. While working on the canal construction in
Washago in 1919 he met Margaret Anne Wilson, the daughter of Olaf &
Maryanne Canning Wilson & they were married at Washago on July 2nd 1923.
