There is a report in the North Devon Journal Herald dated 26/7/1866 which
propably relates to Silas. "Torrington Divisional Petty Sessions, July
21st. Wages: Rowland Hooper of Roborough, appeared to shew cause why he
refused to pay Silas Joslin, his late servant, the sum of £1-10s-10d. in
respect of wages. On the 30th of March last complainant entered
defendant's service at 3s-10d per week, and on the 30th of June
complainant gave a month's notice to leave. A few days afterwards Mr.
Hooper engaged a new servant and told Joslin he might leave. It was
arranged, however, that Joslin was to come mowing for Mr. Hooper the
first dry when the wages would be paid. Joslin neglected to work the day
and on this ground and the fact that Mr. Hooper, having lost a bag of
flour from his premises, he refused to pay Joslin te amount claimed. The
Bench considered that Mr. Hooper had no claim upon the complainant after
he consented to his leaving and they therefore ordered the wages to be
paid together with 5s. expenses."
