1851 Census shows him as head of household (aged 44) & unmarried living
at Huish Farm Instow with sisters Honour & Sarah & nephew John aged 8.
Classed as a farmer of 157 acres.
Note in North Devon Journal Herald dated 4/6/1868. "Instow and Westleigh.
To be let by Tender, for a term of fourteen years from Lady Day next, the
undermentioned Desirable Estates :- Lot 2. Lower Huish Farm, consisting
of a Farm House with convenient Outbuildings and 167a-1r.-18p(more or
less) of Arable Meadow, Pasture nd Orchard Land in the occupation of
Messrs. John and James Joslin. Lot 3. Coombe, in Westleigh, and part of
Lower Huish, in Instow, consisting of a Farm and Outbuildings and
92a-3r-14p. (more or less) of Arable, Meadow, Pasture and Orchard Land,
in the occupation of Mr. Samuel Hookway jun. and Messrs. John and James
Joslin. The above estates are situated about three miles from Bideford
and six from Barnstaple to which towns there are excellent roads.
