Claudus B. Webb (b. 1877, d. 1946)
Claudus B. Webb (son of Benjamin Franklin Webb and Louisa M. Caldwell) was born 1877 in Old Boston, Texas, and died 1946 in Modesto, California. He married Zelma Elizabeth Sparks on July 18, 1898 in Clarksville, Texas, daughter of George Sparks and Pamela Ann Hastings.
Notes for Claudus B. Webb:
It is believed, by many in the family, that Claudus suffered from schizophrenia. I was told, by Dale Webb, that he had a lot in his background that you wouldn't want to know. His family was pretty mean and wild. One of his brothers was a horse theif and others were theives. At one point, he inhearited a farm and he lost it in a game of cards to his brother Frank. He lost the house and farm and he, Zelma and his children had to move. They traveled cross country from Texas to California and at one point Zelma had to leave a trunk behind (I believe in McAllen, Texas) with all the family photos and belongings. I also heard that at some point Zelma and the children were left on the side of the road. Dale said that Claude (his grandfather) would get in these moods and start pacing the floor and then he would spit on the floor (because that was the kind of guy he was) and then something would happen and he would just take off and he'd be gone 2-6 months and come back and say "Aw Mauzie (that's what he called Zelma) and beg her forgiveness and he'd go to church and then never stay for more than 3 months. Ward (Byron) pretty much helped raise his brothers and when Sammy (Samantha) was born I guess Zelma wouldn't allow him to be mean with her and told him that was enough. Claude was pretty hard on his son Barney and gave him a pretty bad time. At one time Barney was working as a golf caddy and he was a pretty good golfer himself (a scratch golfer). He caddied for Peter Jobson. I guess Claude was jelous and he made him quit. Claude and Barney fought a lot. One time Barney did something that made Claude mad. He had a saw in his hand and went to swat Barney with the saw on the bottom, Barney ducked and the saw caught him right in the neck and he was bleeding pretty badly and Claude just took off. Another time they were picking fruit in an orchard and the foreman was picking on Bennie (Benjamin) and Claude got mad. He had a knife in his hand (I guess one used in picking fruit. Dale said it was about 1 1/2 inches wide and about 6 inches long) he wrapped his fist around the knife and hit the foreman and then Claude took off. Claude died in Bakersfield. He was at a gas station sitting on a concrete pier (it was round and the cement ledge was 3 to 4 feet up and a pole came out of the middle which held up the roof above the gas pumps). A truck pulled in and cut too short and cut off Claudes legs. Dale was 19 at the time and had just got out of the Navy. He received the call. He drove to Barney's ranch where Barney, Bennie and Ward were working on building a house. He drove up, got out of his car and told them. They just went back to hammering. Dale says it was because they expected that something bad would happen to him.
A Poem written by C.B. Webb (Just prior to his death)
The Sun Rise of Tomorrow
I.
Will you meet me in the morning at the Sun Rise?
At the Sun Rise of that beautiful golden day;
When all sorrows have vanished forever,
And no tears will ever more dim the eye.
II.
I will meet you in the morning at the Sun Rise!
At the Sun Rise of God's Eternal Day.
When Life's sorrows have vanished for ever;
And His Glories at the Sun Rise I shall see.
III.
I shall meet my dear mother at the Sun Rise;
In the Glories of that Sun Rise I shall see,
Every Kindred friend and loved one, I shall greet you;
At that Sun Rise of God's Eternal Day.
