In a letter to me (Carrie) Margaret wrote (after she sent me two of her school books from when she was a girl)... Spring 2006
Dear Carrie, I just had to send these two books- so you can see how times have changed. We had to sound out our words. My cousin Shirley had sight reading, and even though she became a math teacher, her spelling isn't very good. When we went to school we had to buy everything, books, paper, pencils and pens- that was before fountain pens- all the school furnished was ink for the ink wells. I went to a one room school, there was one teacher and she taught all grades. We never had homework- I can only recall once, when I took a speller home, and that there was a test coming up, and I wanted to get a good grade. I feel so sorry to see these little kids with heavy back packs on their backs- English was my worst subject in school. Math was a breeze- even in high school. Of course now I have trouble adding 2 plus 2. (Margaret was 93 when she wrote this!). I had forgotten that these books still existed. Susan found them out in the garage. There was a whole box full. My sister Anne has some old geography books and a few others too. We are donating to Hillside 2 room school. Most of my cousins attended it. And it's now made into a museum. How times have changed, some teachers had us pledge allegance to the flag- and some also had us say the Lord's Prayer- wouldn't that go over big now? Thanks for the pretty Easter card. It's the only one I received-but I did get lots of phone calls. I stayed home alone, its just too hard to go anywhere. When Barney was still here I always prepared a leg of lamb for Easter- and it was stuffed with parsley- an English woman told how to make it. Now a leg of lamb costs at least $25.00. I love lamb chops, not lamb steak, and 3 little ones cost a little more than $10.00. So you can see that I don't have them very often. I just looked at what I have already written, I've made a lot of mistakes and my writing is really poor. I hope that you can read what I wrote. I do need a new pair of glasses. One thing, they are nearly 3 years old and I've fell asleep too many times with them on, they are cock-eyed. Another thing we were all poor as far as money went. So we tried to buy books from other familys whose children used them the year before. We were poor in money, but we had lots of food as I was raised on a farm. We had 2 pigs and one beef every year. All the vegies and lots of fruit and nuts. My mother canned everything and we had ham, bacon and sausage that was cured in the smoke house. My Dad with a team of horses went to town 8 miles away about once a month, to buy flour, sugar, coffee and a can of tobacco for he smoked a pipe. It was an all day trip going to and from town (That was the good old days). Ah yes, we had cows and chickens too. With all that I'll close. I love all of you. I do think you are a wonderful family- doing so many things with your girls- seems like they grow up so fast. Love, Aunt Margaret.
Margarets 1st husband was named Joh Johnson. Grandma Kittie and Grandpa Bennie and Barney were picking fruit and thats how they met Margaret. They were living in a trailer or cabin. Margaret and John Johnson were living in a tent under a peach tree. Kittie said her husband was mean and probably abusive. Margaret had a miscarriage (maybe because she was treated badly?). Later he was drunk driving and they got in a car crash and Margaret broke her pelvis and couldn't have children. They weren't married long and later she married Barney. Aunt Margaret died of colon cancer on 1-28-07 at about 7:00 p.m. Aunt Margaret smoked cigarettes.
