Notes of 1987 from his granddaughter - Darlene Whaley Robinson (from Mary Ann Sago and Ervin Whaley - Otto's brother):
Otto was born on January 8, 1890 in Hopewell, Washington County, Missouri. His father was Robet Matthew Whaley, about thirty one years old. His mother was Lillie Mae Glore and she was almost twenty seven years old. Otto had oneolder brother - 3 1/2 years old and after Otto there were six more boys and one girl born. One of the boys died shortly after birth.
The family lived and worked their farm in Missouri. All the children worked with their father. Eventually Otto left the farm and went to Collinsville, Illinois to work in the lead smelter and eventually became foreman at the National Lead Smelter.
While in Collinsville, Otto met Mary Sago while she was visiting her cousin. Otto was staying with his cousin. The two cousins were friends and neighbors and were anxious for Otto and Mary to meet. Otto and Mary knew each other about three months before being married on January 26, 1915. Their first child, a girl - Elberta - was born on October 26, 1915. She only lived about twenty months and died on June 15, 1917.
Otto enlisted in the United States Army on February 25, 1918 at Farmington, Missouri. He was discharged from Camp Funston, Kansas on July 8, 1918. I do not know why he served such a short time. After leaving the army, he and Mary decided to go to California. In California he learned the carpentry trade as he had always enjoyed building. Mary describedf him as a very good and successful carpenter.
He had a lot of friends who drank and Otto began drinking with them and became an alcoholic. He tried to quit drinking when a set of twins were born to them in 1925. Both he and Mary were happy because they thought they would never have any more children. Finally, when the twins were about two years old -- and after twelve years of marriage -- Mary left Otto because of his alcoholism. Otto returned to Missouri after the divorce in 1927. He lived and worked in Missouri, he never returned to California. On October 4, 1947 he married Susie Huckstep in Troy, Missouri.
Otto died on March 5, 1951 at the Veterans Hospital, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He was buried at the Elsberry Cemetery in Elsberry, Missouri.
