Timothy was born in the family car, May 24, 1978. Mark had flown to
California to ferry a small airplane back to Alaska for a friend. Sylvia
decided not to be alone since the baby was due. Her mother, Patsy, flew
to Kenai to be with her on the 150 mile drive to Anchorage from Kenai.
Sylvia was driving the Chrysler Imperial when she started having
contractions. She decided to drive as long as she could but when her
labor progressed, she stopped at Indian - which is a small community
along the Turnagain Arm. She remained in the car in front of a bar/cafe
while Patsy took the older siblings, Jared, Barry, Ben and Daniel into
the cafe for a drink. Tim was born in the front seat with only Patsy in
attendance.

The lady in the cafe called the paramedics who came from Mount Alyeska -
just down the highway - to take care of Sylvia. They finished cutting
the cord and insisted that Sylvia and Tim ride to the Anchorage hospital
to be checked out before they would release them. Sylvia insisted that
the older boys see her in the ambulance and know that she and the baby
were fine before leaving Indian. They followed the ambulance to the
hospital with Grandma Patsy.

The paramedics were a happy crew. Usually they got called out to attend
to a bad accident on the curves of the narrow road. They were happy for
a chance to help deliver a baby. The paramedics carried Tim everywhere
to show him off. Tim and Sylvia were released from the hospital after a
brief exam. They went to Patsy's home in Eagle River to wait for Mark to
get home from California.
