Stones River / Murfreesboro, Tennessee
December 31, 1862 - January 2, 1863

After Gen. Braxton Bragg's Confederate Army of the Mississippi retreated from Kentucky in October 1862, Gen. William S. Rosecrans took over the Union Army of the Cumberland from Gen. Don Carlos Buell and set out to drive Bragg from Tennessee. On the day after Christmas, Rosecrans's 43,000 troops marched from Nashville to confront Bragg's army of 36,000 (now called the Army of Tennessee) at Murfreesboro. On the night of December 30 the two armies faced each other at Stone's River on the northwest edge of town. Just a few hundred yards apart, the bands dueled ("Yankee Doodle" v. "Dixie") and finally both sides joined together playing and singing "Home Sweet Home." It was a strange prelude to what was to follow. The Confederates struck at dawn, catching the Federals at breakfast and crushing two of Rosecrans's divisions, but Phil Sheridan's cavalry held their ground on the right side of the Union line. Rosecrans rode back and forth along the front lines and rallied his shaken troops, finally forming a new line along the Nashville Turnpike. By noon the Confederate assault was stalled. On the left side of the Union position, Gen. George H. Thomas held a patch of woods called the Round Forest, and Bragg launched an all-out effort to break it. Time after time a division led by John C. Breckinridge charged Thomas' brigades throughout the afternoon, suffering heavy losses. That night, New Year's Eve, the bands were silent. There was little fighting the next day as both armies assessed their damages and contemplated the next move. On January 2, Bragg inexplicably sent Breckinridge's battered division back into Rosecrans's left side. Union artillery massed across Stone's River hit the charging Confederates from the side at point-blank range and cut them to pieces. The battle was over. With supplies and reinforcements arriving from Nashville, Rosecrans's position was firm, so Bragg withdrew 35 miles to the south. It was one of the fiercest battles of the war. The casualty rate (over 30%) was appalling--13,000 Federals and 10,000 Confederates were killed, wounded or missing. Despite the heavy casualties, it was an important Union victory.
